Bangladesh: What does the ban of Sheikh Hasina's party mean? – DW – 05/12/2025

Bangladesh's interim government has used an anti-terror law to freeze all activities of the Awami League, the party of ousted leader Sheikh Hasina. Is there a way for the country's oldest party to remain in play?

Martial laws are coming up in Bangladesh.

Hasina was one who did the martial laws.

Eh, it’s complicated. The Awami League protected women, workers and minorities (to some extent). Now it’ll be a three way fight between the Western-backed interim government, the army and the BNP (religious fundamentalists). Whoever wins, the people will suffer.

They violently suppressed protests (and quietly suppressed political opponents). I’m not saying they’re good people. I’m saying they’re the least bad option.

Why do you think there were mass protests?

Do you think somebody has to live in a country to have basic news knowledge of what happened there?

The clips of the Hasina cops dumping people off containers and throwing them from roofs were pretty memorable.

Only the people living within the territory are aware about the ground reality.

I live just across the border… I wouldn’t take it to be true what is being shown on the tv screens… After all, they need to bring in profits against the investments that they have made…

So trust the Indian government which Hasina worked for instead. That narrative must be reliable. The public uprising and mass demonstrations can’t be trusted because Modi said so
