The reason they do this is because they know on some level it is a waste of time, but they are heavily invested in it, either financially or emotionally (or both) and can’t ever admit to themselves that AI could produce a bad product, they need to convince everyone else to support it to quell their self-doubt, and they need to insist it is amazing and incredible for the same reason. It’s not unique to AI, all pyramid schemes are built around the same sort of psychological manipulation of people who fall for it.
