27" and 27.5" are not the same thing. 27" always means 630mm with the exception of some obscure Danish bikes that I’m not aware of.
It’s an old standard, quite a bit larger than 27.5" ironically. Slightly larger than 700c even. I have an old bike that uses them, fortunately continental still makes gatorskins that fit them.

I know in the case of mountain bike hubs, the trend for higher engagement points is at least partially to blame. I hear the fast engagement is nice, but I can’t take the sound. Maybe one day I’ll get to experience a clutch hub. I’m curious what it’ll be like on tricky technical climbs, but I mostly want the silence.
Unfortunately I didn’t know this and ended up not servicing my hubs on my road bike until it was too late and the cup was pitted. I still repacked it and replaced the balls, but a new hub is in order if I get back to riding that bike. It’s also probably about time for me to service the hubs on my mountain bike now that I think about it, they get a lot more abuse.
I can’t say the same for hubs. The more expensive they are the more obnoxious they seem to sound. With the exception of Onyx hubs and other one way clutch hubs. But the inexpensive Shimano hub that came on my mountain bike is almost as silent as a clutch hub, making just a slight ticking sound when coasting that I don’t even notice compared to the wonderful sound of my tires on dirt.

IR stealth is very much a part of the F-35 and other 5th gen fighters but like radar stealth it doesn’t make the plane invisible. It just decreases the detection range and makes other countermeasures more effective.
A big obstacle for modern stealth aircraft is that if they get within imaging range of a an electro-optical targeting system, there’s not much they can really do other than using terrain masking as far as I’m aware.
Middle east spectator do say that they will have to wait for further evidence on this one. I am inclined to believe that we haven’t heard anywhere near the full story yet, but if there’s more to it then I expect we’ll find out in the coming days. The comment from a little bit before this one about a C-295 being spotted flying over western definitely makes my suspicions that this went worse than the US will admit go up a bit more.
Those are definitely flares in the footage. It’s definitely defending against something but not video evidence of a shoot down.

Safety is a big factor but one that is pretty easy to plan for for those who want the speed. Like if you wanna go 60km/h plus on what is basically an electric dirtbike you can just wear a full face dirtbike helmet and gear. It’s still a very good point you make since I don’t wanna put on all that gear for a quick trip to get groceries.
I think for me one of the other huge factors in taking it slow on a bike or with personal transport in general is energy. The energy required to overcome wind resistance also scales with velocity squared. So going 1.4x as fast should require about double the battery capacity. Actually more than double, since the slower you go, the more significant your own pedal power is. I don’t have an e-bike yet, but even without the battery, I can ride so much farther if I take it easy and average like… 15km/h instead of trying for 20.

I mentioned elsewhere in this thread that the F-35 does have a MAWS (missile approach warning system) that is designed to detect a missile approaching the plane. These don’t require the missile to be radar guided, they typically instead detect the IR signature of the exhaust plume of the missile’s rocket motor. Also, and AIM-9 should easily be detectable by the radar onboard the F-35, and from the video it looks like the missile approached from the front of the plane which is the perfect position to be detected by the radar. Either the radar was off and the missile approached from a blindspot of the MAWS, or something else really went wrong since the F-35 was just flying in a straight line and not dropping flares (it was flying like the pilot wasn’t aware that a missile was approaching)
We should be able to recognize and call out obvious smear campaigns rather than signal boosting them. It’s important for the credibility of our own criticisms, as well as knowing how to recognize it and respond effectively when these same tactics are used against our comrades.
