I think the purpose of giving it to people who are at high risk of the cancer make the auto-immune risks later a thing they will at least be alive to run into later; and maybe a fix for that will be found in time.

Given the current result of getting the cancer is very likely death, trading that for a potential of death after years more life seems to be a no-brainer, this FUD-like statement notwithstanding.

I fell this in my yesterday, when I went to the freakin’ WAL*MART for something they had but no one else did in the area – and yes, this means I supported the local staff at a local store working for a local manager who eventually pays something to a guy living far away who never lived here, vs supporting local staff at a local store working for a local owner who lives far away in a sunny place. Fuck me, right?

Anyway, they had it. It was under glass. I couldn’t find anyone with a key and a desire to help. I left. But, yeah, on the way out, I was hyper-aware that I’d browsed for a bit, I was wearing a backpack, and I didn’t have a receipt for anything. I was expecting to be challenged every moment until I’d left.

I took a cab ride the other day, in a car the driver probably has bought via a loan, to a pick up an item from a store in commercial space they’re probably leasing, brought in via money they borrowed short-term to finance the purchase of goods to be sold. Tell me which of these CoGS fees they were correct to collect from my payment, and which of these you would rabidly avoid because of the filthy lies.

My region has legal language called the Landlord and Tenant Act, which prohibits the landlord from raising the rent by more than 2% per year. When one vacates, the new tenant of course will have their rent start at ‘market rate’, but at least while living there one’s rent is protected. As well, if removicted, the tenant must be given similar space for similar rent once renos are complete.

This falls down a bit, as transgressors get to go against an adjudication panel, and that sometimes goes all-in for the landlords. But mostly it keeps the dickishness down.

This is gonna go really well when people find out the only way to safely store health and justice data is in a specialized building.

We had a house fire.

My family lost everything. Twice. Once to over-leveraging before a mortgage collapse in 83, and secondly to a house fire. We lived in an absolute fleabag of a moldy motel, a stereotype like you’d see on-screen, for about 10 months. The mold was so bad we had tiny mushrooms.

We got back, both times, to a stable home life in a mortgage and a fresh start. Dad paid off his home before retirement, by working his absolute ass off.

That’s just not feasible now, just one generation later.

Anyway, there was a time when hard work did get you something; so treat that as a historical thing and not a falsehood.
