I think that people with access to higher education who also have constant access to world news is bound to lead to people not wanting to put their kids through it. If you compare that to someone who barely has access to the internet and whose main focus is trying to feed their family and it’s a whole different situation. Humans need meaning in their lives and in western societies this has been waning for a while now.

News@lemmy.world•Donald Trump Says He Wants 'Ownership' of Greenland Because It's 'Psychologically Important for Me'
10·1 month agoNothing. The thing he said about openly shooting someone in the street without meaningful consequences is getting more and more true every day.

World News@lemmy.world•The Netherlands won't condemn US over Venezuela actionEnglish
58·1 month agoBro… condemning them is such a low bar and these ass politicians here are not even willing to take that step. It takes almost 0 effort and is very low risk. We have territories that “belong” to the Netherlands close by that are afraid of what’s going on with their neighbor and you won’t even speak up about it. Weak.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Valve Claims Steam Machine Outperforms 70% of Current Gaming PCsEnglish
7·3 months agoI agree, I think it’s all about affordability and ease of use. If they can sell them for a nice price (somewhere around the price of a PS5 pro) and they’re easy to use I don’t see a reason why they wouldn’t sell. Hell, I might even buy one myself. I have a very old gaming pc (close to 10 years old now) and even though I’ve replaced some parts over the years (ram, GPU, storage), the core of it is still very outdated and it might almost be cheaper to switch to something like this then to upgrade my existing pc.

16·4 months agoI fully agree with you. There’s a reason why people that are terminally online often have pretty extreme ideas.
It really feels like it’s getting more and more difficult to have a good discussion where you can disagree on something but still talk to each other about it. People are in their echo chambers and the dissonance of that to the opinion of someone else is so large that they can’t do anything but call it fake or wrong.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•YouTube will let users booted for 'repeated violations' of COVID, elections policies 'rejoin'English
25·5 months agoI guess it might be about time to finally cancel my YouTube premium over this. I already was a bit on the fence after they bumped up the price, this might be the final straw. There’s already plenty of misinformation on the platform as is, no need to let even more proven spreaders on there.

World News@lemmy.world•The Netherlands will withdraw from 2026 Eurovision if Israel is allowed to competeEnglish
93·5 months agoAs a Dutch person, I’m very glad we’ve made this decision. After reading about Ireland doing the same I didn’t think we would but I’m glad that we did and also that we’ve decided on this somewhat early instead of waiting to see what the “bigger” countries are doing like we usually do with these things.

News@lemmy.world•New York City has sent over 6000 cyclists to criminal court. Some say they are being treated unfairly.
421·7 months agoIt’s the same in the Netherlands. The most vulnerable traffic participant is always protected. Bicycle gets hit by a car? Cars fault. Pedestrian gets hit by a bicycle? Cyclists fault. And so on.

News@lemmy.world•RFK Jr wants bright artificial dyes out of food. Are Americans ready to let go?
93·7 months agoI mean, the fact that there is stuff for sale in the US with the label saying “scientists in California have proven this causes cancer” is proof enough that even a crazy nutter like RFK can be sometimes right.

19·7 months agoHe’s obviously guilty and I really hope people don’t let him get away with it. He should be shamed for what he’s done, even if it was “long ago” (which it clearly wasn’t judging by his continued contacts with Epstein even up to when he was president).

Global News@lemmy.zip•Dutch government falls as Wilders far-right party exits coalition
2·9 months agoNSC and BBB. PVV looks like it might stay as one of the biggest, if not the biggest. But I hope that a successful campaign from other parties can change that. The big party on the left was only trailing by 1 seat at the last polls.

Global News@lemmy.zip•Dutch government falls as Wilders far-right party exits coalition
7·9 months agoAs a Dutch person, I’m very pleased this happened. The only thing that could’ve made it better is if it happened earlier. In the news coverage yesterday you could already see all the “ex” government parties trying to spin it in the most positive way for themselves. I really hope it doesn’t work this time. 2 of the 4 current government parties look set to be nuked next time around and have basically no influence anymore. I just really hope that means that people look more towards the left (or at least the center) when voting again. We’ve had a very long time with right wing governments now and enough is enough.
Our country has been suffering for a long time and things have definitely been getting worse societally, more and more people have been turning into right wing nut jobs who assault police and medical personnel and misbehave in all possible ways.
I’ve even seen it a lot that people don’t even reply to “how are you”, they just start talking about something else. So weird…

Let’s see how long it takes before he gets another pardon and a government position.
