Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•Finnish man builds inexpensive solar boat and sets off to mediterranian. Gives out the plans for freeEnglish
1·2 days agoThat’s why AI means everything and nothing. In games, computer controllwd characters are called AI, although they are straightforward algorithms. It’s a catch-all term.
In early 2000s, at least in the academia, we used AI to refer to neural networks, although it wasn’t a strict term. Then anything machine learning (including regression models) were called AI, now LLMs and chatbots are called AI while other type of models are pretty much ignored. A boat navigation system could use a neural network but almost definitely not a language model at its core.

3·3 days agoYes and no. “AI” has been a marketing term over a decade now, it’s a vague statement which is pretty much mandatory to get funding.
In theory, I agree with you, automated navigation of boats seems like a good fit for machine learning.
That’s their point. Women don’t have sex. Women give sex in exchange for receiving something. That’s how they see women.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•try out my AI agent bro, it'll change your life bro, I swear...English
28·6 days agoIt’s not a local joke, I wish it was a joke, it’s a nugget of wisdom in tech world: when there is rush for gold, sell shovels.
The biggest example today is proliferation of LLM services. There are some uses, some success stories, but a lot of companies are selling services, use my tools bro, you’ll save so much money bro, you’ll vibe-code the next Uber bro…
A few years ago it was blockchains and NFTs. There is no proven use case but so many startups selling crypto wallets and NFT services to “help customers”.
San Francisco is still relevant I guess, for being home to Silicon Valley and tons of tech companies.

Yes, it’s bundled with laptops.
Microsoft isn’t the interesting one at this point. I’m more in awe of how the userbase just keeps taking that shit. That’s a propaganda victory.
At some point Microsoft will publish an update that will shoot the user’s dog and they will just share debloating scripts. Linux is free only if your time yadda yadda.
That’s not a wet dream, that’s exactly what tech corpos are trying to do. Own nothing, rent timeshare.
there is a strong, dark, rich requirement for a protocol designed espressoly for the brewing of coffee
Had never actually checked out the RFC, awesome!
Hear me out. Bread. With AI!

Technology@lemmy.world•‘Your phone is about to stop being yours': anger brewing among Android fans as major Google app change draws nearEnglish
4·10 days agoOh how fun is that the definition of “phone” has changed.
This is all speculation on my side but it can’t look into your files or anything. What we call a smartphone today is actually a combination of a very powerful computer and a telephone in the same chassis. The SIM card can do a lot in the phone part of your smartphone: send/receive/process messages, calls, track your location etc. not open and see through your camera though.
“Why does a toaster need internet connection?”
“So it can receive firmware updates.”
“Why does it need any updates?”
“Security patches because of the internet connectivity.”

271·11 days agoThe meme I hate is “Valve wins by doing nothing”. You cannot be any further from the truth. Valve has won so far by doing many things right, they keep doing many things right. It’s like IT or maintenance work, or being God, your work is invisible until everyone dies.
Wait isn’t he walking?

46·11 days agoIt’s from 2013, folks. Sadly no world-ending DNA.
This is the ideal body. You may not like it but this is what peak performance looks like.

It’s not mad science, it was a natural development. Today a GPU is a computationally powerful add-on that is installed into computers. Plugging a more powerful co-processor doesn’t make too much sense though.
Frequencies back then were also low enough to tolerate more common shenanigans. Accessing on-board or off-board memory didn’t really make a difference etc.
