meco03211@lemmy.worldtoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•I try to be open minded but it's just wrongEnglish
1·9 hours agoNot necessarily. It would be similar to cotton long John’s underneath wool pants. It just creates pockets of air. The heat comes from your foot. The extra barrier would eliminate conductive heat transfer from your foot to the wool while adding in pockets of air such transfer less heat via convective transfer. The problem would be if your foot sweats as now you’re adding in a cotton layer that will absorb that moisture and reduce its insulating properties.
Exactly! Why are comics so current and topical?! I long for a good Y2K comic!

4·11 hours agoI could maybe see if you have high top hiking boots to go sock>insert foot in shoe BUT LEAVE UNTIED>other sock>other shoe (tying in whatever order works). I wouldn’t consider that a full “shoe” though. Like if you put the horseshoe up to the horse foot but didn’t nail it in. It’s not truly on until it’s tied.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever experienced dissociation and derealization? If so, what was the experience like?
21·21 hours agoTIL what derealization is and that’s what it’s called when I feel that way. Personally there’s times I like that and don’t fight the feeling. I just sit there pulled back from the world and just stay.

News@lemmy.world•Jury rules against Elon Musk in his feud with OpenAI, saying he filed his lawsuit too late
21·1 day agoIn considering statute of limitations it depends on when “the clock starts ticking”. Without having looked into the case at all, I’m assuming that was the basis of the lawsuit. Musk trying to say the clock didn’t start until later, or possibly should have been paused at some point. The jury ruled that was wrong.
Again, no knowledge on this case in particular, but that’s what I’d assume.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What idiom did you initially misunderstand, but you prefer your interpretation?
2·5 days agoI don’t necessarily think it is regional. I think it’s contextual. Within the party someone might be told “we need you to toe the line” if that person has been known to go rogue. It depends on what the line being toed is and the speakers thoughts on that line.

Technology@lemmy.world•Report: Google and SpaceX in talks to put data centers into orbitEnglish
1·5 days agoDoes it address water use? I’m aware spacecraft have thermal management systems. But also with the chief complaint of data centers being water use, are these thermal management systems able to dissipate the same energy? You don’t need that much water for earth based data centers without an underlying massive amount of heat to get rid of. I’d wager that heat is much higher than what spacecraft typically have to get rid of. It’s the actual quantity that I’m questioning.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What idiom did you initially misunderstand, but you prefer your interpretation?
1·5 days agoThe big question to me has become, can you toe a line in a positive way?
Yes. People within the party think it’s positive to “toe the party line”. Anyone conforming to what you think is positive is “toeing the line” in a way you’d find positive.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What idiom did you initially misunderstand, but you prefer your interpretation?
12·6 days agoThis is vastly different than my understanding of the phrase. I understand it to mean something similar to “fall in line”. As in conform to some standard. I think it was supposed to have originated in the military where they would have a literal piece of tape in the ground at the foot of your bunk. When a drill sergeant or officer would come through you were expected to “toe the line”. Meaning stand at attention with your toes exactly touching the line.

Hell the bible even has instructions on how to do it! Luckily for the christofascists, they’ve never read the bible.
