I waddled onto the beach and stole found a computer to use.

  • I think it’s a matter of how it’s framed.

It was already going out of fashion in schools when I was growing up, and people did not like it when a teacher (usually older) made them practice it. The original argument of it being faster didn’t apply once computers became common in schools/homes, and printed letters (writing like a typewriter) are better for clarity.

However, I think there is value to it when framed as an artistic skill. Calligraphy strengthens motor skills, and if you make the lesson less rigid then kids can have fun with it and figure out how to express themselves.

  • In higher education, some schools have a chain of escalation, and usually things usually don’t get to the point of actually doing a “trial” (although that does happen some times)

    • students are innocent until the instructor suspects something
    • instructors can implement the penalty that they see as appropriate, but the student can appeal to a higher authority if they think it is not appropriate (department, dean, etc)

Even in civil justice systems, guilty until proven innocent doesn’t mean that someone faces no restrictions until guilt can be proven. When two parties disagree, they will try to solve it themselves while the court remains an option if that doesn’t work out.

Our school actually publishes summaries of the incidents, if anyone is curious what students are getting up to these days: https://universitycounsel.ubc.ca/sites/default/files/media-uploads/files/SD 2024-2025.pdf

The Flintstones ones are very memorable, I wonder if the marketing was helped by the fact that the vitamins look like rocks 😄

That way when they are exposed to the air and begin to discolor (which is harmless from what I understand), it doesn’t become unpalatable to children

  • Thanks, I didn’t know about them before today and this is probably why

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hail_cannon

There is no evidence in favor of the effectiveness of these devices. A 2006 review by Jon Wieringa and Iwan Holleman in the journal Meteorologische Zeitschrift summarized a variety of negative and inconclusive scientific measurements, concluding “the use of cannons or explosive rockets is a waste of money and effort”.[7]

There is also reason to doubt the efficacy of hail cannons from a theoretical perspective.[8] For example, thunder is a much more powerful sonic wave, and is usually found in the same storms that generate hail, yet it does not seem to disturb the growth of hailstones. Similarly, hail cannons are placed at ground level, while hail formation occurs at altitudes above 10,000 meters; a device with an effective range of 500 meters, above, would be unlikely to have an impact at an elevation 20 times higher.[9][10][11] Charles Knight, a cloud physicist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, said in a July 10, 2008, newspaper article that “I don’t find anyone in the scientific community who would validate hail cannons, but there are believers in all sorts of things. It would be very hard to prove they don’t work, weather being as unpredictable as it is.”

  • This feels like a time-traveller changing history scenario. I wonder what the original intent was

BERLIN, Aug 7 (Reuters) - A bus driver knocked an explosive-laden drone out of the air, potentially preventing an ‌attack this week at a German airport that serves as a major NATO and cargo logistics hub, a senior lawmaker said on Friday.

The man spotted the drone flying low while he was working at Leipzig/Halle airport late on Tuesday, then kicked out at it in what Detlef Seif described as a courageous but dangerous act.

The drone, which prosecutors said was equipped with professional explosives and a detonator, then crashed nearby, Seif, from the governing conservative CDU party, told journalists.
