I agree. I really don’t understand why society tolerates, let alone promotes and idolizes, billionaires, while median net worth remains below $200,000, and probably much lower in most of the rest of the world. I don’t think everyone should be forced to be exactly equal but the current disparity between median and Elon is more than 6 orders of magnitude, depending on the day of the week, and even to your average barely a billionaire it is more than 3 orders of magnitude. It’s excessive, and looking at how society is going, fairly clearly unhealthy for everyone involved.

To me it means: the kids are healthy and secure, and coping with the world with a reasonable prospect of a good future. But I agree that it’s a good thing that they aren’t entirely duped by the abusers of AI, if that’s what you mean.

AI is just one of several serious existential threats the kids will have to deal with. They’re far from alright.

Liability means very little in the context of networks of limited liability companies.

Maybe shares should be ‘sold’ on subscription, like so many other things these days. You ‘buy’ them but you don’t ‘own’ them - you just get the benefits of having them temporarily. That should reduce the incentive to ‘own’ shares in companies that are not profitable.

A ‘golden age’ sounds good. Imagine how nice the White House would look if the outside was all gilded in 24 karat gold - shiny! The lights would really sparkle!

And if all else fails, 100% tariffs on an any country that dares to do competing research, with escalation to kidnapping or killing their leaders or bombing them if they don’t slow down quickly enough. That should bring the US back to the fore.

Also: elections! What a total waste of time and money. President for life and the president appoints everyone else. Then the research could really get moving!

She doesn’t have to successfully conclude the prosecution to completely ruin someone’s life. She should be in prison herself. What she did should be a crime, if it’s not already. Same goes for Trump. Lying scum, both of them.

Destruction of precious resources in order to create a monopoly is not good for society.

It’s best for the AI companies if there are no sources other than their AI.

The harder questions are: what do you mean by living? What do other people mean or understand by living? How does any particular definition of living help someone understand, communicate about and predict events?

There are many sources reporting essentially the same. There may be some bias or exaggeration among opponents of the practices, but with so many sources it seems unlikely that all the reports are fabricated lies.

Unfortunately for almost everyone, in many ways, the US is already worse than Russia.

I want the US to support the rule of law, negotiate with honesty for mutual benefit, respect human rights, reform its political system to achieve democracy internally and stop invading, threatening to invade or otherwise interfering in the affairs of sovereign nations. But the US is what it is.

I too found it interesting, but also troubling. Sadly, there will be no end to violent conflict to look forward to, in my lifetime.

I take the downvotes to indicate that many people find the activity described in the article to be unacceptable.

Some people seem to find Israel’s behaviour to be morally justified and appropriate while others find it repugnant. My personal opinion is that while some of the ends are reasonable and justified from a moral perspective, some of the means of achieving them are not. I am then torn between promoting awareness of and insight into the activities and attitudes, and expressing opposition to what I think are unacceptable means of achieving their objectives.

If someone wrote an analysis and critique of this from moral and legal perspectives that put the intentions, actions and expected outcomes in the context of historical norms of acceptable behaviour, it would be easy to upvote the analysis as it would simultaneously promote awareness and a more broadly acceptable moral perspective.

On the other hand, there will be no agreement on the morality of what is being done or should be done. There is very little that could be said about Israel that everyone or even just a substantial majority would agree with. The situation is riddled with conflict and moral dilemmas.

Oppression, in all its forms. Once established, it’s not easy to overcome.
