Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•We need a word for "literally" that doesn't also mean "not literally"
8·5 days agoI’m fine with descriptivism on theory, but it sure seems wrong in the cases where the word changes meaning due to people misunderstanding/misusing the word. That’s not a a word gaining a new meaning, it’s losing meaning.
The other one I need a replacement for is “begs the question” since so many people have misused that one too.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•In a way clipboard and safety vest can get you to a lot of places, you could probably get away with bossing people around in dark plain clothes equipped with a walkie-talkie making random quotes.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Jet fuel can't melt stinky beamsEnglish
41·12 days agoIt’s also why a solid wood beam does better in a fire than steel. Once the outside is charred it shields the inside and the beam can keep a good bit of its strength before eventually failing once the outer layers get burned through. The steel heats up quickly and goes soft long before its melting point.

Mountain air is pretty great.
Also a big fan of the smell of allspice. I remember as a child climbing on the kitchen counter to reach the spice cabinet so I could crack that jar and get a good whiff.

memes@lemmy.world•Pase 1: Destroy Earth. Phase 2: ? Phase 3: Profit
4·14 days agoI think Frieza could’ve destroyed Namek instantly if he wanted. That was a deliberate slow destruction on his part. Vegeta is plenty strong enough at this point in the story to essentially instantly destroy Earth.
We see Vegeta and Nappa standing in their open pods out in space when they destroy that bug planet on their way to Earth, so presumably they can tolerate being out in space at least for a little while too, so maybe his “plan” was too call up his pod to his position after things blew up.
Probably dehydrated from those massive tears
