I only really know Incubus from Drive, any favorite songs you’d recommend?

        Oh, buckle up!

All of the newer stuff sucks (post 2009, specially the Morning View album remake), but the whole of the original Morning View album is phenomenal.

Incubus is a band that has changed their sound distinctively throughout the years. If you want to experience that, here’s what I recommend:

Album: S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Motif: A fusion of metal, rock, and funk. Raw sound that focuses more on zany immature lyrics and excellent vocal talent. Just a lot of fun to play on full blast in the car. Recommended songs:

        • Deep Inside
        • A Certain Shade of Green
        • Vitamin
        • Summer Romance (Anti-gravity Love Song)

Album: Make Yourself Motif: A movement away from focusing on drug use and sex and more about self discovery and the joy of independent thought. The band really matures into alt rock at this stage. They still have some signs of funk, but the band begins to show the first signs of their more relaxed vibe that would permeate Morning View. Recommended Songs:

        • Drive
        • Make Yourself
        • Pardon Me
        • Nowhere Fast
        • Stellar

Album: Morning View Motif: Keeping their alt rock roots, the band shifts into a more relaxed sound in the latter songs of the album. The band has stated that this was their favorite album to record and it shows. This is the album that defined a lot of my life outlook as a teenager. Recommended Songs:

        • Nice To Know You
        • Circles
        • Warning
        • Are You In?
        • Aqueous Transmission

Album: A Crow Left Of The Murder Motif: Guitarist Mike Einziger’s most refined sound. The band ditches most of the chill vibes for a more angsty tone. There’s a lot of cultural commentary in this album. That said, it’s here that the band starts to fade from glory a bit. Recommended Songs:

        • Sick Sad Little World
        • Talk Shows on Mute
        • Megalomaniac
        • Made For TV Movie
        • A Crow Left of the Murder

If you’ve made it this far, I recommend checking out Light Grenades, but that album really starts to lose the original raw spark that Make Yourself had.

        Enjoy Incubus!

Fantastic breakdown! I saw them a few years back, and Sublime with Rome opened for them. It was a great show!

You fukken rock. I’m gonna start with Make Yourself since it has the song I know and then try S.C.I.E.N.C.E. after I finish my current album. Thanks so much for the rec!

          • Hell yeah! Would love to know which albums you end up liking (if any).

A list like this is how I got into Jimmy Eat World, so I’m happy to pass the stoke on for a band I truly love.

I just put on both albums and listened to them through. I really enjoyed When It Comes and Clean off Make Yourself. I totally forgot I know Pardon Me too lol. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was interesting as hell, I’m not entirely sure how much I liked it. A few songs kinda reminded me of RHCP, but most were just totally their own thing. Some awesome drums in this album, which I really appreciate. New Skin and Nebula were probably my favorites off that one, Glass was fun too. I’m not sure which album was better, I guess I’ll need to check out the rest later!

              • Nebula is such a fun and weird little song - it’s one of my favorites as well.

The thing about Incubus is you never really get the same band on any of those old albums. They continue to evolve and grow, experimenting with their sounds and concepts all the way.

At least… up until 2009. After that things fall a bit flat. Most recently, the lead singer (and heartthrob) Brandon Boyd had some nasal issues come up and his voice fell off a fuckin cliff. Fortunately, he had corrective surgery and has mostly returned to his usual form.

I just don’t think they’ll ever make interesting music again because I think they’ve lost that drive to risk and experiment. But that’s life: we have to appreciate the things we have instead of dwelling on the things we don’t have.

I don’t know if S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is my favorite album period, but it’s way up there and I would say that I’ve relistened to it all the way through more than any other album, only a couple SOAD albums and Rubberneck by the Toadies come close. It’s just so energetic, absurd, and just plain fun! If you like S.C.I.E.N.C.E., you’ll probably like “Enjoy Incubus” too.

Probably a good call starting with Make Yourself though, it’s a lot less weird lol

            • S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was so great for me because I discovered it after I already loved the band. It was like I got to discover a whole new side to them that I didn’t know. It’s one of my favorite albums because it’s just so raw. You can tell they were just really excited to be making their own music and they weren’t going to compromise until they got the vibe they wanted (even if the musicality wasn’t phenomenal).
