But I thought everyone would boycott Nintendo for being too greedy and bricking everyone and their mother’s device right after launch? And all the games play better on other platforms? And Nintendo is only for kids?

That right there is why social media, and especially Reddit, is circlejerk bullshit.

Jfc what a defeatist ass attitude, I’m not buying a switch 2, are you?

Bringing attention to issues is a good thing, just because the result doesn’t pan out like you hoped or expected or whatever the fuck this response indicates your position is, doesn’t mean it had no effect at all.

Coming to Lemmy I’ve massively improved my knowledge of Linux and have moved away from centralized services in general and moved toward self hosting much more then I would have otherwise without the influence of users here. Everyone isn’t doing this so clearly it’s just a circle jerk right?

Yeah but there a few basic facts even you need to acknowledge:

        1. The Switch boycott doesn’t exist outside the internet, people irl simply dont care and are willing to pay up
        2. Lemmy is a relatively niche platform, we think we’re big but thats objectively untrue.
        3. The vast majority of people will never switch away from centralized services
        4. The vast majority of people dont know about Linux and if they do than they dont care
        5. Self hosting is significantly smaller even among tech nerds
        6. The vast majority of people dont care about privacy
        7. The vast majority of people dont care about game preservation

So when this platform is the exact opposite it makes it look like a circlejerk or at least an echo chamber

That’s saying the same thing as the first person, just because it’s a small group right now doesn’t mean it’s not worth spreading the information and sentiment, I for one talk to people in real life about my issues and why I won’t financially support Nintendo, do you?

Was reading about it, apparently the first year is always supply constrained, not demand constrained (unless it’s a complete flop or something), and Nintendo prepared a lot of supply.

Love my switch, but I honestly have no interest in Nintendo anymore. There are plenty of fantastic games around that don’t require paying Nintendo prices.

Plus my old switch is still totally cormulent.

Upvote for use of the word cromulent, it doesn’t get enough use. 😀

Buying on launch is generally for hardcore fans. If you are happy with Switch, nothing wrong with waiting a while and seeing how Switch 2 looks in an year or so, and also how the rest of the gaming ecosystem is at that time.

There’s a lot of good reasons it won’t… they need a lite version… smaller, lighter, better ergo and no detachable joycons, for less money. The switch 1 lite is the version all my extended family double and triple dipped on. It was just kid friendly.

They release a version like that 2 years from now, and there’s a good chance they can keep the sales going into a new generation of kids.

Yeah, everyone who has used OLED doesn’t want to go back to the LCD version. It’s possible they did it manage the price, or maybe they are just hoping for people double dipping if OLED is released later, or it could be the mix of both. Who knows.

I have to believe it’s for cost reasons. It’s a very strange downgrade considering they already released a literally upgraded OLED version of the Switch 1.

I actually normally play on the TV, but my wife has always preferred handheld, and it wouldn’t be fair for only one of to get a Switch. And the 2 came out literally on her birthday, so even less so. So I got her a Steam Deck instead and, have to say, should have gotten it sooner. It’s essentially a Switch 2 - no limit recordings, OLED, more power, etc. more surprising is that it was lighter than the Switch 1, so she’s really happy for that, and I have a PC so at least it’ll tide us over this gen until an OLED version is released.

(Not to mention I built a cartridge dumper and dumped my versions of BOTW and TOTK to play Ryujinx. Have had 60fps, 4k, jaggy free versions for free for years, so the 10€ cost to get them on Switch 2 was just extra insulting. Those should have been free updates to make up for the lack of games at launch)

Switch 2 is 1.18lbs, Switch 1 OLED is 0.93lbs, Switch 1 is 0.88lbs, and the Steam Deck OLED is 1.41lbs. So the steam deck is almost twice the weight of Switch 1 lol. I would guess the more ergonomic grips made it seem like it was lighter.

The heck? Indeed it did! Definitely feels lighter!

I guess it’s because the weight is more spread out too since it is a bit bigger.

fwiw, the Switch 2 screen is gorgeous, they did a really good job on this custom display. Putting it side by side oled and the average consumer wouldn’t be able to tell the difference “except one is bigger”.

I am happy with my Switch 1, and Switch 2 is exactly what I wanted, a backward compatible “better” Switch, like PS5 after PS4, so I am going with Switch 2.

On the other hand, if you don’t care about Nintendo first party games, Steam Deck can be a good choice. Or if you can wait a couple of years, there might be Steam Deck 2, which will probably be better than both Steam Deck and Switch 2.

First party titles are basically the only reason to buy ANY Nintendo console. However there are alternatives. For example if you don’t have a Nintendo console but want to (legally) play a 3D Zelda game, just play one of the Batman Arkham games as it’s basically the same core gameplay loop. For a 2D Zelda game play Tunic.

Oh yeah, Zelda has a special place in my heart, but tunic just did such an amazing job revealing just enough to keep you hunting for the next step.

If you haven’t loom up some of the speed runs for Tunic. A lot of the game can be skipped simply by knowing what you already need to do, a bit like Outer Wilds.

It depends. Do you want to play witch 2 exclusives and don’t have a pc? Then switch 2, you don’t have an option there.

Do you want to play 3rd party games or nintendo preswitch (and actually some switch games too)? Deck, the games will be cheaper, you can buy bundles, you won’t have to pay for online, you can install from steam, gog, epic, etc. It’s a pc.

As you already have a switch, I’d wait on the 2 if you don’t need to play MK World right now. If you wish you could play PC and older console games on the go get a deck (I did and it’s great) but if you don’t care much about the PC backlog you can just wait until the 2 has some more exclusives our and/or you cand find it cheaper. I’m currently revisiting some PS2 games alongside newer indie titles and it’s very cool.

It’s down to personal preference, in my opinion. Steam Deck has more flexibility (any game store + Steam, since it is just a Linux PC in a convenient form factor, so you can go through the massive PC back catalogue as well as enjoy massive sales), but the Switch 2 has a wide array of exclusive titles (Mario Kart World is like my dream Mario Kart, and I am not ashamed to admit I’m addicted to Fire Emblem) as well as the third party titles. Deck has more online features (Nintendo for some reason refuse to put achievements into their consoles, plus Steam has the community pages), but Switch 2 has a better local multiplayer experience (being able to detach a Joy Con and play with a friend on a long train ride or something is amazing). I would say buy both, but most people would rather not do both (since it’s a lot of money, two separate devices, and also two separate libraries). It really depends on your priorities. Personally, I lean more Switch 2 due to its good combination of exclusives and third party games, but that is heavily influenced by the fact I have one.

I have a launch LCD Steam Deck and yesterday was planning to upgrade to the OLED version. Unfortunately:

Steam Deck OLED 512GB and 1TB models are temporarily out-of-stock in the US and Canada as we adapt to recent supply chain constraints. We anticipate being back in stock by end of summer, and currently expect prices will remain the same. We’ll update here as soon as we have more clarity on what the timeline ultimately looks like.

My guess is that it’s probably because holding off keeps it in the media longer. If it’s scarce you’ll get 50 different articles talking about how shelves are empty of X console, and a much bigger problem is if you accidentally overbuild, and you realise the demand isn’t actually there. Though on the other hand, standard marketing would imply that you want as little friction as possible between the customer and buying your product, so I’m not sure.

It’s nice. Today I was playing it with a friend. The larger display and detachable joycons are great for easy socializing activities. Besides Nintendo first party games I have no intent to buy any single player games for this console. But anything local multiplayer, I’m all over that. Ya I hope someday PC handhelds can become ubiquitous local multiplayer machines that weigh about the same as a Switch 2. I just don’t think they’re there yet. Eventually someday but it’s a nascent developing form factor for PCs. For now I’m happy to have a Switch 2 and a Legion Go
