Sometimes the alt text makes the image even better. I saw one from Shen comics the other day that went above and beyond on that alt text.
This is especially true with xkcd.

I just looked in to it b/c my browser isn’t showing it either. It turns out the alt text is just for when the image doesn’t load or screen readers. The title text is supposed to be for tooltips, or what you’d get if you hover over the image.
I only browse Lemmy on Voyager, and when I click on a post image to show it “full screen” it shows a caption/text description of the image. I assumed this was the Alt Text the OP was referring to 🤷🏻♂️
