The USSR was absolutely doing research in machine learning and artificial intelligence, or what they defined as AI. The idea of artificial neural networks is not new, both the west and the USSR were doing research on it in the 50s and even had primitive prototypes. This is a FOIA’d CIA document that talks about some of the research taking place in the USSR: https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/document/06731721
(I originally reposed on disroot but it’s kind of a mess to sync with, I’ll update if I’m able to get a cleaner document)

edit 2: disroot doesn’t want to sync so I put it on cryptpad instead: https://cryptpad.fr/doc/#/2/doc/view/RbBpEY1Sue NxopZYgd7G8bQDUiXoe-lcZJ5y7jrB5E/embed/, this is an OCR of the pdf they link at the top of their page.
