Any game that innovates with gameplay/art style is an instant buy for me. Unfortunately I won’t be able to play it immediately as I’m a bit busy but I hope to give it a try soon.

By all respect without hating on it (love the game as it is), there is not much innovation in art style or gameplay here. From what I read in reviews the gameplay is oldschool standard shooter mechanics (which is good news to me!) and the art style is old and known, also used by other games before. What makes this game so special is how well it is executed and brought it into one coherent game.

Funny thing is, I knew a long time ago it was a boomer shooter. I was miffed that it boiled down “detective work” to gunning down whole rooms of people.

But, on a second look, I’m surprised to see there’s a lot of genuine worldbuilding, exploration, and conversations to go into the mystery! Sure, gunning down hordes is still used as the central play, but I like when it’s not overly reductive.

    Great execution of an idea

Sadly it has the same problem as cuphead for me: I really really REALLY hate the old Disney animation style on a visceral level

Oh ok that makes sense I was unfamiliar with rubberhose, however based on how its described in the Wikipedia article, cuphead doesn’t entirely follow that animation style since characters like king dice have clearly defined elbows

I’d prefer it if the 3D environments were at least slightly stylized and didn’t look like default marketplace assets with a black and white filter over them.

I assume its on purpose, to make the characters standout more. I get the feeling of old films where live performance was mixed with animated cartoon. So the contrast might be a design choice. I personally do not get the feeling of “default marketplace asset”-flips.

Eh, maybe asset flips is too harsh, but I do think the texture work on the environment meshes just don’t match the 2D characters. It’s kind of like placing 16bit character sprites next to 8bit character sprites; you can tell one is way more detailed than the other. That’s how the environment looks to me; it’s not following similar style guidelines as the characters.

The style is a huge red flag for me… I don’t think “woah cool rubber hose animation” I think “oh, another hyper-styled game with no actual game”. Negative reviews confirmed this fear.

Yes, because apparently you lack any form of ability to think and/or comprehend what you read.

As I’ve said right from the start of my comment chain, I want games that have gameplay, I do not look to style.

I don’t know why you’re having such trouble handling this. Get a grip.

This game has both gameplay and style. The high amounts of positive reviews prove, definitively, that it has both gameplay and style.

What you have done is cherry picking, a logical fallacy.

Now, if you don’t like the style or the kind of first person shooter game this is, well… Those are subjective matters. But you’re not talking in subjective terms; you’re saying there is no, or a lack of, gameplay. And that is simply put objectively wrong.

it’s a shallow game covered in style.

That’s not a preference, and there doesn’t appear to be any evidence that it’s even true. I don’t like or dislike the game, you’ve just made a determination about the game based on literally nothing while all available evidence we do have (the reviews) indicate the opposite.

Hello, i put so far 10 hours into the game and i like it a lot. But you are correct. The style and setting is immaculate. But the gameplay just isnt. It has tons of little issues because they crammed to many mechanics into the game while none of them truly shine. Its alright. But it isnt deep or needs a lot of skill. I’m more than happy with a vibes based game where the gameplay stimulates me just enough while looking forward to progess the story further. But your assessment is just correct. If i leave out the artstyle, setting and story of the equation its a 6/10 game. Maybe 7/10 at best because you could argue it still feels better than the sum of its parts. For me its a 9/10 but i like vibes and you never said i’m not allowed to have that opinion. idk what going on here.

    Art style looks cool.

Requires Windows. My computer can’t run that (by choice, also by design — it’s a Mac). So that’s a red flag I can’t ignore.

Anyway, it feels like this game has been coming for years. It doesn’t help that it looks somewhat similar to that other retro cartoon bullet hell game I can’t recall the name of right now. That game doesn’t interest me though; this one tentatively does if it has an easy mode or the difficulty is fair.

I think that calling it a redflag is a little out there when you buy a mac. Who buys a mac expecting to game on it? That’s like complaining about games on steam not working on Linux in 2012.

It is a red flag for them. Just like how before proton lots of us said “No tux, no bucks”, just because it’s not a red flag to you does not negate their opinion of it.

A red flag is an indicator that something is wrong. It’s not a deal breaker, though red flags can also be those. These are different concepts with some overlap. A red flag in this case would be the developer stating they don’t care about non-windows systems.

You’d be surprised at how many games run on Mac natively. RE2 Remake on a MacBook Air is surprisingly good.

That being said you can’t expect every indie game to run natively in every OS.

Windows doesn’t usually need them as most games are native, and Mac doesn’t do Vulkan (in their immense wisdom Apple decided to invent Metal instead) so it can’t use dxvx. Valve could still have wine there which would work most of the time, but it might be a lot of support for a janky experience at beat.

Yeah, but it would still be nice to have the option, even if it was buried in the settings somewhere. Proton on Linux works great for old games that often don’t seem to work on Windows.

I can run Steam Deck verified games on my Mac? How? (I don’t think I can, I think you just missed that I have a Mac, not a Steam Deck.)

I didn’t look for Steam Deck verification, I just looked at the OS flags above the price. They have them for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

If it fully supported Linux, there would be a Tux (penguin) icon next to the Windows flag on the Steam page. And then I would have said “Requires Windows or Linux,” or I would have worded it differently.

Art style is amazing and extremely well-executed, but yeah, the gameplay sadly never did anything for me. Also there was something about the sound design and especially the story that just…didn’t click for me. There just wasn’t much fun for joy in it.
