      The shipping lanes stick to the Iran side for geological reasons. The Oman side of the strait is large jagged rocks and the Iran side is sand. So the boats know exactly how deep the Iran side while the Oman side’s depth is highly variable. If you run aground on Iran’s side you get stuck in sand. If you run aground on Oman’s side you shred your hull.

      The Houthis are allied with Iran. I don’t know much, or hear much, from the Oman government. But the tolls Iran started to charge were to be split between Iran and Oman.
