In capitalist states the public opinion is ruled by private mass media, and now more than ever it’s the likes of Zuckerberg and Musk that decide what people can think by narrowing what they can know
And the owners of private media are also the owners of our government. That’s kinda the big problem at hand. The state exists to reinforce ruling class interests.
They use the power of the private media to seize the government; so effectively we are ruled by private media because it shapes public opinion and government.
That being said, participation in both is a choice. We can stop it anytime by not participating & demanding change (striking, not consuming shitty media, etc)
Semantics, but they have always had power in our government. They built and designed it to serve their interests. The state fundamentally exists to maintain ruling class hierarchy and enforce laws which govern our systems of ownership.
The ruling class uses the media to keep the people brainwashed into thinking the system exists to “protect them” and “maintain order”. The problem is intersectional.
But you are right, participation is a choice. We can stop and organize among ourselves to create a new society out from under the boot of authoritarian oppression. So, for people to not participate, we must create alternatives for them to choose from to meet the need they are trying to fill and make it as convenient and available for people as possible to encourage them to make the jump.
