If I pointed out an item on a menu and someone asked to read a ridiculous name or loud I’d walk right out. Here in Germany I can’t imagine anything like that ever happening. Don’t know about the US, of course, but even there that seems far-fetched.
For real? German bakeries do this all the time. It’s a fucking Kürbiskernbrötchen, why do they all feel like they have to invent their own bullshit influencer name for it? Chances are 9 out of 10 get them from the same factory even.
Some German bakeries have excessively stupid names for their products too, though. I always refuse to say the name but point to the product in question. The usual answer is “Oh, you want one of the [silly-gibberish-name-of-an-overpriced-thing-that-tastes-like-sawdust-anyways]” - I nod, and that’s a successful transaction done.

Oh, for sure, but I usually also get the disappointed look and the “you mean the Jens-Lehmann-Gedächtnis-Kürbisblaster-3001?” correction.

Ohhhh so that’s why German people learn English, so they don’t have to say the ridiculous German words out loud!
In my experience, the average German person outside of an airport, train station, or tourist destination speaks very little English if any.
