    Which is a big shame because the setting is a great opportunity to explore and criticize some great issues like independence, racism, historical materialism, class, penal labor, and whether or not the concept of Europe should have ever been allowed to exist.

    You know, deep philosophy.

      It tries to do some of those things sometimes. How the series handles racism feels weird. Most people are horrifically racist against the Darcsen (the broad analogue for the Jews/Roma), even on the Gallian side, but the protagonists seem weirdly passive about the issue even when its their friends or adopted family members being racially abused by randos in front of them.
