    Probably. “Shonen” is popular, which means anime/manga aimed at the demographic of 12 year old boys. It’s not really surprising that this genre often features settings which utilize child soldiers and have children as main characters.

      But when you are a kid you don’t want to be a kid, you want to be something big and powerful, like a dinosaur, an anthropomorphic shark or the guy from gargoyles. It’s usually when you are an adult that you want to be a kid, because work sucks, not me, school sucked even more.

        Kids want to self-insert and imagine themselves in the role of the character though. Same reason Harry Potter was so wildly popular.

        Come to think of it most of the extremely famous western kids books have been isekais aimed at kids. Harry Potter is basically an isekai of a normie kid whisked away into the world of magic. Narnia is basically an Isekai. Alice in Wonderland too. Twilight.

          I guess you are right. Media aimed at kids does often have kid protagonists. The Heinlein juveniles also often feature teenagers. Now that you mention it, even dragon ball started with Goku as a kid. In that case the part of the saga were he is a deadbeat dad is more popular.

        There’s probably just some cultural aspect to it as well. They weren’t kids but I’m reminded of how its famously said that part of the reason why Kojima introduced Raiden in MGS2 was because many female Japanese players complained about Snake being too old and unattractive.

        Also I’m reminded of something I once heard about Marlboro (?) having to swap rugged cowboys for rich ranch owners in advertisements in some foreign market (China?) because they were just seen as dirty farmhands, not aspirational figures

          I remember when I was in high school, one time I was hanging out with older kids(college kids) and they were making fun of this girl(Italian doctoral student) who had adopted a very ugly kitten, and she said, “maybe the cats is like sean Connery, and he will get more handsome as he ages”

          I guess that wouldn’t have worked as a defence in those cultures.

          But know that you mentioned it, the most Interesting man in the world almost didn’t get casted because they wanted someone younger, untill his wife asked: “how can the most interesting man in the world be young?” Wich is sort of what the op is about.
