I didn’t say they were huge benefits, the other user said they were getting “nothing in exchange” and I was listing several things they do get. I definitely wouldn’t say they are huge benefits on their own but if the alternative is total economic blockade and the majority of their infrastructure destroyed and millions of dead Venezuelans, it does seem like they got the best outcome available.
Many people here are libs and don’t understand Marxism even a little bit. They read a headline and form the entirety of their opinions based on it. They do no research into the topics they discuss and then pretend to have well formed thoughts. They don’t understand the dialectical nature of reality, they see two steps back as a total defeat instead of a setback on the path of progress. This is just one more phase in a multi generational struggle.
If you compare Venezuela to what happened in syria, bolvia, Colombia and others, it is clear that the chavistas haven’t been totally defeated despite this recent tactical defeat. I would even hold out on saying Bolivian and Colombian revolutionaries are defeated (unlike syria which definitely is), but the Venezuelan project was many times more established and cemented in the masses than Colombia and even Bolivia
There are more intellectual ways to talk about it but ultimately I think my analogy to to talk about it like getting robbed at gun point is quite precise. The advantage of handing over your wallet when you are getting robbed is not a big mystery.
I totally agree. Living to tell the tale is better than dying. Especially when what is dying is a socialist project supporting millions of people. This is what almost always has happened to socialist projects, it is almost always worse for them to fail, even when they are not doing a great job at building socialism.
