What makes a state a state is being ratified in Congress. I’m not sure you understand how this works. You don’t just get to make a new state because people vote for it.

I’m all for people staying safe and taking care of themselves, but the problem is moving makes the entire situation worse. Concentrating ourselves into small geographic areas inside cities is what allowed them to gerrymander the shit out of things and get the minority political party locked into outsized political influence.

People refuse good treatments because of their own social or cultural interpretations allllll the time. Belonging matters more to humans than survival. As a nurse, the reactionary response of anti-vax conservatives to the pandemic really put the lie to Maslow. Human beings absolutely prioritize belonging above their basic survival needs.

There are people living in vans scraping by on meager SS who are happy as peaches with their new life right up until some illness or injury lands them in my hospital unit and they have no option for support except our horrific nursing home system.

I’m a little older than the age range listed in the article and I literally became a nurse with the explicit expectation that I will have to work until I can’t stand up anymore. At least this pays well and gives me lots of options for working environments that might be a little more compatible with old age.

It’s only illegal for them to lie. This fits in the very narrow gray area of what they’re allowed to say because technically it’s not untrue. No contract in the world guarantees anything will or will not happen. A contract gives you the ammunition to sue the person you entered into the agreement with, if that person (or corporation) violates the agreed upon terms. So a union contract still gives you leverage and power over a corporation, but technically it doesn’t guarantee the terms of the contract will happen.

Edit to clarify: I’m not suggesting the anti-union propaganda has any validity. Just that they get away with this because technically it’s not lying.

Your lease doesn’t guarantee that your landlord won’t violate its terms either. But it does give you the ammunition to take them to court and win compensation, if they do.

The same applies to a union contact. It’s legally binding in the same way. Sure the company technically can violate the terms of that agreement. But the union is going to escalate the issue to the NLRB and/or sue them in court, if they do. And you will win, if you provide the evidence that they violated the legally binding contract.
