news@hexbear.net•'Powerful optics': China's Xi to welcome Putin, Modi in grand show of solidarityEnglish
4·3 months agoGenuinely and in good faith can you explain this perspective to me? Please don’t tell me to read theory, I have. I know that imperialism is not simply military action, but is monopoly capitalism and the export of finance capital. Russian mining companies like Severstal and Rusal own facilities throughout Central Asia and Africa. Do you dispute Lenin’s definition of imperialism, or think I misunderstand it? Please help me to understand this perspective. Education is necessary for self criticism.

12·3 months agoI certainly don’t blame them for that either, and I was perhaps too harsh in my first comment. I just get annoyed by the number of communists I see who heap praise upon a society whose own government admits is capitalist.

30·7 months agoMaybe I’m wrong, but I don’t this type of guy actually exists. I don’t think there’s anyone who cares enough to buy fluoridated water, but not enough to brush their teeth.

news@hexbear.net•Florida is poised to become 2nd state to ban fluoride from public water systemsEnglish
45·7 months agoThis will not happen. Fluoride is already available to people who can afford it in the form of toothpaste, and toothpaste is a way more effective method of fluoride application than drinking water. The point of fluoridated water isn’t that it’s the best way to prevent tooth decay, compared to toothpaste it really isn’t. The point is that it provides fluoride to literally everyone, even people who can’t afford toothpaste, because everyone drinks water. It is completely pointless as a product.

news@hexbear.net•Florida is poised to become 2nd state to ban fluoride from public water systemsEnglish
28·7 months agoYou should be using fluoride toothpaste regardless of if your water has fluoride or not. Fluoridated water is better than nothing, but fluoride only prevents tooth decay when it’s actually physically in contact with your teeth. Obviously that contact is much more consistent with two minutes of brushing compared to the seconds it takes water to pass through your mouth when you drink.

Games@hexbear.net•people are right to be upset their hobby is pricing them out.English
4·8 months agoI can reduce your hobbies to “past-times” too. There’s nothing creative about putting some pre-made car parts together. Might as well call building ikea furniture a hobby. I go into sports stores all the time and I don’t see rc cars or miniatures, so it’s pretty clear those things require no creative skill and are on the same level as watching tv.

Games@hexbear.net•people are right to be upset their hobby is pricing them out.English
15·8 months agoThis is an absurd take. Even by this pointlessly reductive definition of a hobby, plenty of video games and sports still count. Do you honestly think there’s more creativity involved in fixing a car than creating an entire city in City Skylines, or figuring out new tricks on a skateboard? Watch a video of Danny MacAskill on his bike and ask yourself if that’s honestly less creative than fixing a car.

traingang@hexbear.net•Post your transit pet peevesEnglish
4·1 year agoAdding to this, I hate transit stations that don’t have ticket machines. The BRT station near me has an indoor waiting area, wifi, an arrivals board, but no ticket machines. Gotta go to some random convenience store almost a kilometre away to reload your card instead. Why do they do this.

traingang@hexbear.net•Post your transit pet peevesEnglish
12·1 year agoOh my god, there are far too many to name and I’m always looking for someone to listen to my ranting about terrible transit. Sorry, but for asking this question you’re now going to get a very large wall of text.
1: A lack of signal priority. Countless hours of collective human time have been wasted in transit vehicles waiting at completely empty intersections for a red light to change because the traffic signal uses the state of the art technology called a timer.
2: Terrible right of way. Way too many transit agencies place their transit lines not based on where demand is highest or where transit will be most effective, but just where land is cheapest or where the transit agency already owns. The principal rapid transit line in my city runs along a river because the city already owned the land, but it means that literally half of the area surrounding the transit line is just completely useless because it’s water. Highway median transit is another example of this, which can often lead to…
3: Terrible land use surrounding stations. Almost without fail transit stations in North American cities are surrounded by parking lots, highway interchanges, or just straight up undeveloped land.
4: The North American light rail obsession. Nearly every single new or recently built rapid transit line in the US or Canada is done using trams, often running partially on the street, with absolutely no consideration for if this is the right transit solution for a given city. Link in Seattle is a good example. It’s absolutely absurd for a city the size of Seattle to have light rail. A city of 4 million people in any other developed nation would have a proper metro, but because Seattle is in America it gets a shitty light rail.
I may return to update this later but this was all I could write for now
Even people having private and consensual sex untainted by the profit motive practice choking in dangerous ways. There’s absolutely no reason to believe things would be more safe in the porn industry, and a plethora of reasons to believe they’d be worse.
