Ain’t that the fucking truth. My wife and I have a local file server with 16TB of platter drives on it for this very purpose (RAID10 for data safety purposes mind you, so 8TB;We really do not trust high capacity platter drives due to history).

We keep a 1TB NVMe on it for the OS drive though. Gods know the hardware is already old enough on it (8GB DDR4 with an i5-6600) and we don’t need it being any slower than it already is.

Fair warning on platter drives though. They’re starting to get affected by the AI shortage due to the sheer necessity of mass storage in data centers and people getting desperate for local storage. The price hike on them isn’t going to be nearly as dramatic as anything on solid state drives and RAM were though.

I’m surprised there are so many platter drives still putting around in the consumer space. I think I switched my main drive to an SSD in 2010 or 2011. I lost my mind when my boot time changed from 2 minutes to roughly 15-30 seconds.

I am now curious when laptops and pre-mades stopped using platter drives in their systems. I know that they’re still used for high capacity situations as they were fairly low priced prior to AI, but you don’t see them as a primary OS drive often anymore.

The only problem with cost is that charging stations are starting to get as expensive as actual gas. I made a long trip this past week and had to pay an exorbitant amount just to travel for a few hours. I think it cost me $62 to travel 580 miles round trip, which is ridiculous (I was charged something like $.60 per KWh at stations and my car gets about 3.7 miles/KWh with the A/C on, the first 250 miles were on a home charge, which cost $.18/KWh). The stations used to be roughly $.40/KWh, but gods did they jack the prices up recently.

To put that into perspective, my old Prius would’ve gotten 48mpg. With gas being roughly at $3.75/gallon this weekend, it would’ve cost less ($45) to have driven the Prius. We don’t have it anymore though.

Still better than a gas vehicle, but these fucking charging stations are catching on and trying to eat us alive now.

With the way the debris was falling in a video I saw, it was likely an ultralight aircraft. Can’t imagine it was intentional or caused much damage.

Legitimately this is how you get a lot of people to hate AI. Or at least I hope it does. I am sure a lot of individuals out there are ignorant as to why prices are increasing or that they’re increasing at all.

Mac Mini also got jumped by $200 and I just sold mine last week. Fuck this shit.

I was actually surprised with how close the equivalent came out to be through their build. I haven’t priced out a build in years, but it was genuinely surprising to see how expensive a mid-low end build is now. Gone are the days of the $500 console killer.

The problem here continues to remain that I know almost no one that can just shell out $1050 for this device. I get why it is priced as it is, but this is definitely not going to sell to what I imagine their initial target audience was. It’ll just be relegated to enthusiasts with too much disposable income.

That said, it is a good entry into PC gaming, the platform that generally does well and can still play games from >20 years ago on a modern machine. One can’t look past the fact that I can still play the games I bought on Steam in 2008 on the computer I built three years ago in 2023. That is easily the biggest selling point of this device to the average consumer in my opinion.

I’m actually right at that point myself. I really prefer couch gaming over sitting in my computer chair and I was hoping for this to be more affordable, but I cannot in good conscience spend $1050 on these specs. I’ll probably just lug my primary PC into my personal room every once in a while.

There’s also the custom-made PSU and thermal design you gotta put into it as well. Those won’t make up the remaining amount to get to the cost, but it shouldn’t be left from consideration. Apparently it took a ridiculous amount of R&D to get it to function inside that small form factor (according to a Gamersnexus video I watched when it was announced).

That said, I have no fucking idea who in their right mind is going to buy this. Maybe someone looking for a lower-end gaming PC?

The gameplay of Engage was overall okay, but the story felt superficial and they really pushed the classic characters in that game to where it felt like the game’s original characters were sidekicks. I lost interest very quickly and I think I dropped it after the early teens chapters.

Three Houses had a good story, but the rest of the gameplay had too many avenues to being extremely powerful and it threw the overall balance off pretty significantly. I also didn’t care for the hub inbetween chapters. I’m more fond of the old-style cadence of start of chapter story, main chapter gameplay, end of chapter story, next chapter. Adding in a lot of busywork inbetween just doesn’t jive with my personal tastes. That said, it was still a great game, but it’s just not the style I prefer.

As I said, I’m glad the series as a while is evolving and becoming something greater. The direction isn’t quite for me, but it definitely appeals to a lot of people and they deserve something to enjoy. I can always go back to the Tellius duology if I want after all, lol.
