  • ‘walking distance’ there is literally not a sidewalk for hundreds of meters or more from where i live. i get the horrors of the suburban experience except my house is outside all the local gentrifying rich ppl suburbs right on a major road so i get few of the alleged benefits. no walking and hardly any neighbors here. not a shred of a sense of community. i have to drive and spend gas money to get literally anywhere outside my house. absolutely amazing environment to go through childhood in, no out-of-school friends or sense of belonging in a community or free range child (or even adolescent) adventures or anything like that, a constant panopticon of mediocrity. no way that could possibly ever lead to being a mentally wrecked loser of an adult no way its the safest way to live. america is an alienation farm i stg

  • i can’t watch the video thru this link but from what i gather its like the boston dynamics robodog but with wheels for feet. adding wheels to robot legs is probably the Coolest design choice possible. it’s ingenious really, you need something to be the ‘foot’, and that something might as well have built-in shock absorption and also spin to provide a traversal option that circumvents the major disadvantage of legged vehicles, speed on flat ground, without removing the capacity to use the legs to traverse more complicated terrain. skating quadruped robots might even handle terrain at speed that a car or traditional UGV might not ever be able to handle, using the agility provided by legs to position wheels. i want my car to be an oversized one of these so badly. i can’t wait until someone makes a useable larger bipedal version of this, xi-plz make my skating mecha dreams come true!

frankly tho i would just put the wheels on the main chassis separate from the legs for simplicity’s sake, used with legs folded more like a traditional wheeled craft, so the wheels are still useable if the legs break and you don’t have to put electric motors or wiring or whatever in inconvenient places through the legs. it would lose a little agility without ‘mech skating’ but i think it might be worth it for reliability/ease of manufacture/repair.

  • i think you are correct, google images says the following are MICLIC carrying vehicles and they look very similar.

i’ve heard of MICLICs (‘MIne Clearing LInear Charges’ for those not problematically obsessed with tools of war, a bunch of explosives attached in a line for clearing paths through minefields) before but have never seen how they are carried or deployed, it’s especially interesting how it seems like the MICLIC tubes are inside of the ‘turret’ hull, underneath what i presume are at least lightly armored panels that fold out. I would usually expect something like that to be mounted on the outside of a vehicle in a tube or something (like a TOW launcher would be on the side of a Bradley turret in an external box). I wonder if the charges are particularly volatile or susceptible to incidental detonation or something.

bonus sci fi pic - this fashionable lad also carries a MICLIC tube!

  • i haven’t finished it yet because the controller i use on pc for emulators is broken. i do remember that there are like 2 significantly different campaign playthroughs depending on some dialogue choices in the early missions, there might be other choices as well. i think it determines which of the major political factions you work for in the campaign, and i’m pretty sure one of them features an ally/protagonist/party member that works for the Chinese who recruits you and your friends, who so far has been portrayed as an ok/good guy. front mission games from what i’ve played tend to be fairly pessimistic about any political faction i think, similar to Ace Combat kind of vibes. Left Behind (technically part of the series i believe) is the closest to having a clear-cut badguy faction and i haven’t finished it yet either (the on foot 3rd person stealth is just not very good, not enough robot missions but the robots are super cool when they show up) but i think it was leading up to revealing that the situation is less obvious than it seemed.

  • lmao navigating the relationship drama of those around me is exhausting. not even anyone’s fault so i can’t find toxic relief through blame lol. on top of all that, best case scenario i will be significantly more alone-er in the near-ish future. it will be a curse and a blessing, i like having (unproblematic) people around to analyze media and stuff with, to compare experiences etc., but i all too often find the expectations of dialogue to be an interruption of some obscure thought i’m trying to process. maybe more space and time and isolation-induced unhinged-ness will make me manic enough to accomplish something. worst case scenario it doesn’t work out for them and they relapse into alcoholism with a risk of self-harm or worse. i’m pretty terrified of the last person i talk to regularly being gone but i obviously want them to be happy. i know i’m going to be less upset than i expect and that will only bother me more, like dead family members or childhood friends that are completely forgotten until you have a weirdly emotional dream about them like once or twice a year that makes you question some of your past choices and priorities but otherwise change nothing about your current life other than a vague sense of existentialist ennui for a few days. i need to sleep now.
