To distance themselves would mean a metaphorical decapitation, which would severely limit their political power, and thats just not something they’re willing to do. Kids grow up witnessing who gets away with it, so when those same kids get older and want to get away with it, they become cops, Republicans or priests, because they know those groups will protect them from accountability when/if they get caught. This issue has been compounding for multiple generations culminating in the running joke we see playing out today.

Think lots of people who grew up around sexual predators understands this, they see the victims as vindictive and ungrateful, in their minds they did nothing wrong. They always twist their actions to be the fault of the victim, so releasing information to hurt the victims is 100% predictable.

Thats assuming they don’t just enforce this one way. With Trump, you have to expect it’s going to be one set of rules for his friends and an entirely different set of rules for everyone else.

The UCP in Alberta and the CPC federally, are both so deep in Trumps pocket they’re trading pocket lint and hard mint candies as NFT’s.

The sad part is they try so hard and get no acknowledgment from Trump. Taking control of Venezuela has even created a financial quagmire for the UCP budget. Not that they probably care, they’ll just cut public services to keep the kleptocracy running.

I have the distinct feeling they won’t be calling an early election, if the UCP got what they really wanted, the next Alberta election would be held as an American territory, and the UCP would be running as Republicans.

Something I’ve learned in the last decade, no matter how unpopular a position, MAGA supporters will fall in line with the party rather than risk threatening the parties authority.

This is the correct reaction to a criminal administration violating laws and court orders with impunity, however this is not the reaction we see from most police departments. Police are supposed to work for the community, upholding the communities rules, not for whoever wields the biggest stick, or whoever they agree with politically.
