I agree in principal, but: 40 1/2 = 40/1 + 1/4 = 160/4 + 1/4 = 161/4

The pride stuff is PR. Advertising it sends a message. Dropping it also sends a message.
They were also one of the early companies to cave on dropping DEI programs.

Astronomy@mander.xyz•Sharper than ever: New algorithm brings the stars into greater focus
4·2 months agoI believe this is a new deconvolution image stacking algorithm that can easily be run in hardware. It should work with any observatory. The math is far enough above my head that I can’t be sure though.
It would be cool if this makes it into software that people could use at home. I would love to see what amateur astrophotographers could to with it.

News@lemmy.world•Most House Democrats vote to kill Al Green's impeachment measure

News@lemmy.world•After New Yorker dies of EEE, state declares virus an "imminent threat to the public"
90·1 year agoEEE is Eastern Equine Encephalitis should anyone else be out of the loop on acronyms like me.
The top is the percentage of people while the bottom is the total incidence. This is an apples and oranges comparison. In this case the bottom map is functionally a population map as others have pointed out. Most stats are best in “#/thousand people” or equivalent, but should always in the same unit if compared.
Facts, reasoning, ethics, ect. are outside the scope of an LLM. Expecting otherwise is like expecting a stand mixer to bake a cake. It is helpful for a decent part of the process, but typically is lacking in the using heat to process batter into a tasty desert area. An AI like one from the movies would require many more pieces than an LLM can provide and saying otherwise is a a category mistake*.
That isn’t to say that something won’t be developed eventually, but it would be FAR beyond an LLM if it is even possible.

Science@beehaw.org•Harassment of scientists is surging — institutions aren’t sure how to help
5·2 years agoPersonally, the “just asking questions” transphobes being called on their bigotry doesn’t really seem the same as medical researchers getting harrased for trying to find treatments for deadly diseases…but maybe that is just me.

Global News@lemmy.zip•Can a U.S. Ally Actually Be Held Accountable for War Crimes in the ICC?
81·2 years agoWell congress has already authorized “all means necessary and appropriate to bring about the release of any U.S. or allied personnel being detained or imprisoned by, on behalf of, or at the request of the International Criminal Court”… So I’m inclined to agree.

politics @lemmy.world•Conservative co-sponsors abandon their own bill after gay politician’s powerful speech
3·2 years agoIf we are going to use binary, I vote for IEEE 754. The precision, accuracy, and lack of ambiguity of floating points is what we need for something with the simplicity of gender. /s

My experience with purity tests is that they typically wielded from a place of privilege, often in such a way as to defend themselves from criticism. I’ve seen purity tests used to dismiss sexual assault and ignore the lived experiences of marginalized communities.
Reality doesn’t fit neatly into boxes like the people who wield purity tests seem to want. Sometimes people don’t have the same opportunities to learn and understand. Sometimes you have to work with people who support policies that would see you dead. Not only does perfect not exist, the pursuit of it is one of the biggest barriers to achieving actual meaningful progress.
