I think the development speed issue is less the languages it’s using and more that the devs spend way too long hashing things out and trying to get everything perfect rather than settling for “good enough” due to Mastodon effectively being the reference design for fediverse stuff. Misskey for instance has way more features than Mastodon.
I think one of the biggest problems is that upvotes or whatever they’re called don’t federate. Every time I’ve played around with using a smaller instance, it felt incredibly empty because posts would have almost no upvotes. Even instances of like middling sizes can feel empty depending on who you follow.

Among the requirements of the DMA is that Apple ensures that headphones made by other brands will work with iPhones. It said this has been a block on it releasing its live translation service in the EU as it allows rival companies to access data from conversations, creating a privacy problem.
Is this an issue because the headphones are connected to some app made by the headphone company or something? I’m trying to figure out why this is an issue when headphones (at least that I’ve seen/used) don’t have internet access.
This really feels like their go-to solution in the past decade or so. Silence whatever they think is the problem and then maybe try to fix it later (sometimes by “fixing” the wrong thing). Tbf this seems to the goal of a lot of states now, unfortunately.
I mean, I don’t think I’d classify someone like that as straight up poor. They’re certainly working class, but if you can afford to survive for a year without work, you’re significantly more well-off than someone living paycheck to paycheck.
I think there’s a small middle class who could survive without working for a year or so, but wouldn’t really be able to live well. Probably mostly just lower level tech workers and so on. Although if they moved to really poor areas in the US they could probably be classified as rich so YMMV I guess.

Hopefully they finish stabilizing cross-platform backups through the new service and port local backups to the new format in a reasonable timeframe, although I’m not gonna hold my breath. I still think it’s completely ridiculous that this (really basic tbh) feature took so long.
In the post, they say it’s something they plan to do in the future building atop the changes they’ve made, so it’s not fixed yet.
While this is good since it provides some revenue beyond donations and also simplifies data backups, I think it’s kind of ridiculous that they still have not implemented a way to restore backups cross-platform (it’s just left as something they plan to do in the future). Like, is it really that hard to just export and import a file in a standard format?
