5·27 days agoI’d argue that the “unseen” can still tell us a lot about games. Any Austin tends to focus on open-world games, and these rely on simulating a world to an extent that a player is willing to suspend their disbelief. Skyrim needs rivers because the real world has rivers, and while players will expect to see them, they are unlikely to care much about where the water comes from/goes. But a developer needs to put the rivers there, and will have to grapple with these questions to some extent. Even then, the developer does not have to create a full simulation of Skyrim’s hydrology, they just need to keep one step ahead of what the player cares about to make the world feel “real” enough. Poking at the boundaries of a game can tell us what players and developers do and do not care about, and I think that ties in to what you’re looking for.
“Ya know Mr. von Braun, I find this rocketry stuff fascinating. The idea that that we have the technology to send a man into space? Truly incredible. But it’s funny, I was reading this book about WWII, and the head of the V2 program in Nazi Germany was also a Wernher Von Braun! Now what are the chances of that? Two von Brauns who both work on rockets?”

10·1 year agoI always figured the playbook was something like:
- Cut staffing (and save $$$)
- Shrinkage increases due to fewer staff
- Construct a narrative around rising crime, of which locking up products is a part
- Get more cops
Congratulations, you’ve successfully shifted costs of protecting your property on the public!
Return of the Obra Dinn is also good for this
The remake. While I do think it pushed the art too far in the direction of “generic mario”, there are so many other things better about the remake:
- updated music is fantastic
- lots of QoL improvements, like better item management and mechanics that make battles go faster
- Updated localization, mostly for the better (though I do miss Mallow telling Mario “who do you think you are, Bruce Lee!?”)

The fascist shoots and laughs.
The liberal shoots and cries.
The liberal must ascribe a moral dimension to his feelings, or else confront the fact that he is no different from the fascist. His target is just as dead.
