Lemmy doesn’t seem to get much recognition in the wider Fediverse - it tends to get bundled as part of ‘other apps’. Mastodon is much bigger, so better integration with Lemmy probably gets deprioritised below their own issues and feature requests (e.g. I was reading today that Markdown support is often requested, but the base version still doesn’t have it)

I don’t think it’s technically impossible - all the information that another site needs to properly interpret some activity is in the JSON that’s sent. I get the sense that it might be unrealistic to expect Mastodon to make the necessary changes though. It seems more of a political issue than a technical one.

It’s partly an issue of keys. Every fediverse actor has a private key and a public key. When my instance sends this to fediverse@lemmy.world, it’s signed by my private key, and lemmy.world uses my public key to verify it. When fediverse@lemmy.world sends this comment out, it uses it’s own private key to sign it. It can’t just re-transmit my comment, because it doesn’t have my private key. All it can do is Announce that I’ve made the comment (and sign the Announce).

Mastodon treats Announces as Boosts, so every post/comment is interpreted as a thing that fediverse@lemmy.world has boosted, so you get all these un-connected posts appearing. I think it’s mostly up to Mastodon to remedy.

It works better if a Mastodon actor posts into a Lemmy community, then you get the mix like you imagine. e.g.: https://mastodon.world/@Flash/112095241193510662 (this particular post was crowbarred into Lemmy via !tails@lemmon.website, but it would be the same if the author had done it.)

I’ll keep going - I’m sure the article’s author is someone who genuinely uploaded some confidential info and then became really involved with privacy/GDPR etc, and not someone who was always been really involved with privacy/GDPR issues and now has a story to fit.

Flippin’ eck. Seeing a familiar Lemmy post on there, clicking it and seeing the whole thing render instantly was a bit of a shock after getting used to Lemmy’s more pedestrian loading of stuff.

I realise that Lucas has said that the ewoks in Return of the Jedi were representations of the North Vietnamese. If you look at Rogue One, though, Saw’s men are called terrorists, they use IEDs, it’s a desert environment … so the Rebels are, um, ISIS? Who do we want to win again?

Star Wars has always been too flakey to say Rebels are definitely this, or the the Empire are definitely that. It’s popularity, and it’s use by people on any part of the political spectrum as a a recruitment tool, depends on the fact that the US is magically both.

Star Wars is often “Schrödinger’s Political Allegory” - the Empire is British/Roman/German but also American (if Endor = Vietnam, and Jedha = the Middle East), but the Rebels are somehow American too. Whatever side you’re on, you can use Star Wars to cast yourself as the good guy, and the other side as the baddies.

Wait, what? Bullock’s character is actually dead in Gravity? I’ve been watching that movie way too literally. Kinda messes with her character’s arc though, if she karks it halfway through.

Just to say, I massively prefer the name ‘microblogmemes’ over ‘whitepeopletwitter’. That was always a weird one - posts didn’t always involve white people, didn’t always come from Twitter (which - technically - doesn’t even exist anymore) and seemed based on a petty misunderstanding of what Black People Twitter was.

FWIW, I agree with you about the Denny’s post. I’m also the moderator of a community that Stamets has quit, so I know that losing him is a blow, because he posts a lot of content. But I also know that he’s a complicated human.

My way around this is to use ngrok.com, which is a quick and simple way to create a temporary VPN with a domain and SSL. On the free plan your domain changes often, which will break federation every time you reconnect.

You can now get 1 free static url with ngrok’s free plan. The ‘free’ part of it is that it needs relaunching after a certain period of time (every 2 days, maybe?) but it works well enough to develop things.

It’s Lemmy’s fault: the original is a static gif file, and picts-rs has converted it into an MP4, on the unsophisticated assumption that it’s animated.

programming.dev changed how active users are calculated on their instance to include voters as well as posters & commentators. It’s a massive difference - programming_humor went from about 700 monthly active users to about 7000, for example.

Viewing communities from other instances from programming.dev’s perspective will give a figure that includes voting activity.

Voyager was set up to test the app, but that doesn’t mean other clients can’t use it.

Enterprise is full of random test communities that have many been populated by bots. I don’t understand how something like https://enterprise.lemmy.ml/c/mels_test (to pick a random one) isn’t useful for what you’re trying to do.

I think https://enterprise.lemmy.ml is specifically for testing. It’s not typically federated with other instances, so it won’t be a problem if your bot goes crazy again.
