  • Come on, you can do better.

On the wikipedia page you linked, there is exactly zero occurrence of the word “pain”.
The only part that could remotely be linked to your previous argument does not indicate pain at all.

The GLVs responsible for the smell of freshly cut grass play a role in plant communication and plant defence against herbivory, functioning as a distress signal warning other plants of imminent danger and, in some instances, as a way to attract predators of grass-eating insects.

This paragraph is a less sensational and more serious reformulation of the source material, an opinion piece stating the following without a single scientific reference

Trauma, that’s what. It’s the smell of chemical defenses and first aid. The fresh, “green” scent of a just-mowed lawn is the lawn trying to save itself from the injury you just inflicted.

This piece was posted in May 2012 on mentalfloss.com, so not really a scientific study.

Also, nothing in there speaks of the brocoli, which you first referred to.

    Edit: spelling, formatting

  • I found this guide by Futo’s Louis Rossman pretty beginner friendly and rather complete.
It’s really recorded with the idea that you can follow it step by step and at the end have something fonctionnal and useful.
Not overly fond of the guy, but on foss and self hosting at least we share values.
Also, there’s sometimes a cat on screen :)

    Edits

    • it has some software choices that I do not share, but I don’t think it matters much - once you’ve built something that works and gained experience, you can do it again with other choices if you want
    • IIRC you need 3 computers to follow the guide
      • 1 to act as router and (among other things like network-wide ad blocking) allow access to your self hosted stuff from the outside world
      • 1 to actually host stuff onto
      • 1 to configure everything from
      • you can use pretty much any small cheap-ish computer as long as its processor is of the x86 type (which most are except raspberry pi and anything labeled Atom)
      • you’ll probably have to dance around a bit with screen and keyboard if (like me) you only have one of each, so having the 3rd computer as a laptop (with an RJ45 port) or watchig the video from a tablet is recommanded
    • the video is really meant as a complete do-along (even telling you where to find the ISOs to download) which is IMO quite rare and really nice

If you find steps in the video or stuff in my comment that don’t make sense to you, please ask and I’ll do my best to provide useful and understandable explanations.

  • In a capitalistic world where your right to stay alive is determined by the money you make, replacing himan jobs by machine ones is a real problem.

If what was happening was “ok so the machines are gonna do that so you’re gonna have a lot more free time but you still get your wages”, I for one would be happy.

But what’s happening is more along the lines of “well I hope you didn’t just get a mortgage because here’s the door hahaha don’t be sad think lf the extra money the shareholders are going to make” and it’s a real problem.

Just because it’s logical that shitty bosses take shitty decisions which impact negatively other person’s lives doesn’t mean we can’t be upset and vocal about it.
