Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How to avoid hating the opposite gender after reading what they write online?
5·5 days agoInteract with them in person. Men and women write a lot of polarising shit online, but once you go outside it’s (usually) not that bad. Sure, there’s always some asshats here and there, but I feel like there’s also a lot more good people around than you realize.
The world’s leaders looked at history, and instead of saying “we won’t make these mistakes again”, they said “we can do it better”.

Memes@lemmy.ml•More than half of US families are one paycheck away from homelessness.
96·11 days agoIf one paycheck is all that stands between half of the people and homelessness, can it really be called the “middle” class?

science@lemmy.world•‘A bombshell’: doubt cast on discovery of microplastics throughout human bodyEnglish
22·14 days agoSo, just science being science then? Disagreements have always been a part of science, and always will be. The only important factor is how they are handled. Think a study is flawed? Repeat it, and change the flaws to see if the results differ significantly. But openly discrediting any evidence (for or against a case) without testing is as unscientific as it gets. I believe the person at the end also has a point: yeah, we don’t know if microplastics are as bad as they say, but better safe than sorry.

52·14 days agoForced upgrades (or downgrades) really are the worst. Same for opt-out services instead of opt-in. Give choice back to the customer goddammit!

Biology@mander.xyz•Scientists can now watch plants "breathe" in real time
2·16 days agoIt might, but I think engineering plants to be drought resistant is still a long way off. There’s more to going from C3 to C4 than just stomatal function, like the typical Kranz anatomy of a C4 plant and the extra biochemical steps in their carbon fixation. Then again, some common crops (like corn) are already C4 plants, so it could be possible to make them even more drought resistant. I just don’t know how they’ll ever improve the yield of crops under drought stress, even if they can survive it.
Edit: that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth looking into, of course.

Biology@mander.xyz•Scientists can now watch plants "breathe" in real time
2·16 days agoI think this is a great discovery, but I don’t know if it’s the massive breakthrough the article makes it up to be. Improved water efficiency is great and could cut irrigation costs (if the farmer changes their irrigation method accordingly), but if there’s not enough water in the first place I doubt an improved water use efficiency will do much. Still pretty nice though.
