Mind boggling. I’ve been in the inside of big tech. Idk if my company was better, or the systems were better exposed to me than others within the company, or something else entirely. But this would’ve gotten me fired, and a review of the processes in place to ensure that information like that isn’t recorded, and is discarded otherwise.

I’m not saying they’re great. I’m saying they’re great at convincing themselves that they do respect privacy (in no small part out of fear of regulation IMO). Something like accidentally recording and exposing intimate moments like this is just too on the nose for the people who want to believe they’re the good guys.

I suppose on that note: it seems like a really bad idea to become a public figure after a while. Like you obviously don’t want your immortality found out. You have to have like illuminati power before that point though, but it could happen at any time. Like if something happens and you become a news item (i.e. helping someone out and a video goes viral online). Not saying everyone is all that close to going viral, but over a sufficiently long lifespan you’re effectively rolling that dice a lot.

I think the saving grace of the Internet is in the small holes that arent populated enough for these big actors to care about. If you’re influencing a nation, you probably aren’t going to inject your AI slop into a tiny proboards or like the forum on Gaia Online.

first I’ve heard of this show, so forgive me if you’ve heard this before. But. Aren’t all LOTR stories generic, because “generic fantasy” (as we know it today) was defined by LOTR in the first place?

At least, any LOTR story that would blend with the original texts/movie. Peter Jackson’s even on the poster, though IDK what his relationship with this work will be. I’m sure you could make an out-there story set in middle-earth, but I’m skeptical that it would be recognizably LOTR.

What’s the traffic on invidious? Like, while I don’t necessarily agree with the ad-block-block, the profit motive makes sense given their ubiquity. But are there really enough users of alternate YouTube frontends that Google is capturing any meaningful profit? Especially when developer hours are expensive and could be used elsewhere on more valuable projects?

No shade to OP. Something like this isn’t likey to trip BS alarms unless youre already aware of how big this should be. and it’s the kinda thing that isn’t sexy enough to grab public attention, which lends some credence.

like, I read a headline like, “FUSION MAKES POWER NOW, FUSION POWER PLANTS EXPECTED NEXT YEAR” and I know it’s BS. But part of that is the way it promises to affect your life, and it does do in terms of Fusion, which enough people would recognize so as to make their eyeballs valuable.

Might be LLM bunk. If you’re consuming science news, then first: I recommend PBS Spacetime and second: if a quantum gravity was actually formulated, you’d hear about it there first. It might actually be exciting enough to make CNN.

the internet is just… Such a shitty venue for these conversations. I have friends in the real world who disagree with me. Typically you pay for a battle pass with some sort of currency that costs real money to acquire. The battle pass isn’t anything on its own, but if you play the game you’ll then unlock experience or whatever with the battle pass, thus unlocking whatever it contains. Often that’s cosmetics for the game, sometimes useable items, and sometimes it’s more of that currency that costs real money.

IMO they suck. Usually they expire at the end of the month, so if something comes up (family emergency, computer died, whatever) you wasted it and paid for nothing. It’s a cheap trick to devalue a player’s purchase, and to try and boost player count in lieu of good gameplay.

But apparently if you completed the battle pass, it would give you enough premium currency to buy the one they out next month. So theoretically you might only have to buy it once if you were diligent in finish the pass before it went away. Now they’ve taken that away because they wanted more money.

Right, I recall news from years ago where a bunch of celebrities’ very private photos backed up to iCloud were leaked. They may or may not have known they uploaded those to iCloud, I dunno. But imagine what’s up there if you don’t realize you’re doing a backup. Not just photos, but like scanned documents with vulnerable information. And all that personal info in a centralized server is a big ol honeypot for a malicious actor.

It’s not hard to see why this is a vulnerability, is what I’m getting at.

The affect of the microwave would fall off exponentially with distance. So like if it has X power at Y feet away, and you go out to 2Y feet away, the affect would be quartered. The affect on a drone isn’t going to do much, even if it really messes with your wifi close up.
