It’s genuinely a phenomenal 10/10 game, but I feel it was made specifically for a fandom to obsess over it, and I am glad for those people, I really am, but

It’s an extremely good game, though it’s not for everyone. Out of all the souls games, it has the largest amount of story in a traditional sense of the word, but it is still very minimalistic compared to most games. It has enjoyable themes that you don’t have to dig out of the item descriptions of every pointy stick you find, unlike the rest of them.

Mainline SMT games are much bleaker than Persona games, and you are probably not going to enjoy them as much unless you specifically like the bleakness, although V and the Vengeance story both do a lot to make the bleakness more palatable later on. You might want to check out Metaphor Refantazio instead, it is almost comically Persona-like at times, though even more thematically confused.

It has no timing-based elements, and the stories don’t diverge that much if you choose to do similar things.

I would consider just screen sharing and making the decisions together, though, mostly because the game loves to talk a lot and I would be constantly afraid of talking over it, and it’s not like the experience of controlling the walking is a high point of the game.

Both are great, Nocturne (original or remaster) is the more interesting and artful of the two, but it is also way less modern design-wise. If you don’t feel like being a little frustrated by the game, you should go with V instead.
