it didn’t really vibe with me, but I’ve seen some terrible takes on this movie, so I’ve kept my mouth shut. pre-colonial Africa is a historical setting I’m eager for more of, so I think it’s tragic they took the framing of “good” Dahomey vs “evil” Oyo.
If any well financed Auteurs are reading this, try making a Historical film in Damagaram.
Like, I’m a history person right. I haven’t watched the movie but I think the person it’s based on was a slave trader whereas the movie version is anti slavery. It might be like making a movie about Queen Ginga and pretending she was anti slavery, which is just crazy. But media’s not supposed to do my job, which is to teach history to people. So I’m not one of those who get really pissed off at creative liberties, shall we say. Even as I am concerned that a smart right winger can spin a narrative about whitewashing out of stuff like this.

No you see 21th century brits are the true ancient egyptians, historical accuracy is only important if we can cancel non-white movies with it
