Melanoma was my favorite part of this episode. I howled every time she appeared.

Only now? They’re way too interested in making fun of everyone and everything to pull off good satire frequently. Even when they have a specific target, they’re often on the wrong fucking side of issues… Like equating trans people to trans-racists or trans-speciesists. Hell, Ms. Garrison is a constant joke of trans people. Directly calling cleaning up the environment and using green energy “gay”. Frequently making fun of global warming as not real. Blaming consumers for Walmart killing small towns. The whole Muhammad thing was just stupid given they already showed Muhammad in the Super Best Friends. Other races and nationalities or even people from other states/regions are often just trashy charicatures, which is fine on its own in juvenile commedy, but ruin any seriousness they sometimes attempt.

I’m sure there are plenty of other more recent examples I’m forgetting because I haven’t rewatched them all recently, especially the later seasons.

In general, their push in to more constant political/targeted satire has been shitty. They’re way better when they’re just riffing off of themselves or very generic cultural norms that probably deserve some ribbing. Not straight up juvenile parody.

Trey Parker is too immature himself to make poignant satire, so when he tries it often comes off like a teenager making crass dismissive commentary instead of anything meaningful. They really need to get back to making their own stories that only sometimes parody real events, instead of trying to parody everything going on ‘now’ while not even having specific goals in mind.

This is a show that started off as a shitty cartoon with curse words in it. Where a giant satellite dish comes out of Cartman’s ass because aliens. Where one of the earliest running jokes was Kenny dying in every episode. Does it really need to try and comment on every fucking current event?

They have gotten some things wrong for sure and they took it to easy on trump for a long time but these last few episodes are absolute gold and I’m back to watching every episode after a long hiatus. A lot people I know are loving this

They’re not bad at making fun of things, and fuck does Trump et al deserve every once of being made fun of for the little piss baby he and his fascist cabinet is…

Though my post is about satire, not just making fun of shit. I’ve been laughing at the parody, too, but what is South Park going to actually achieve in all of this? Even the South Park creators themselves agree it’s just sophmoric ball-busting.

There are people who idolise the gang (and their views/sayings) from It’s Always Sunny just because the show is good and they are the main characters. Even if the show does constantly a lot to point out they are dogshit people.

And neither the cast nor the show runners share the views of the gang/characters. But I assume that is simply clear enough.

No, this is about South Park first and foremost, and what the show satirizes goes far beyond what the main characters do.

You seriously read as if you’re commenting on something else, and the downvoting of my main point leaves me to believe even Lemmy users are too fucking stupid to understand how bad satire is, in fact, bad.

(btw, Always Sunny usually does far better satire than South Park)

The last time I expressed these opinions on South Park, I had a healthy upvote ratio, so either something fucky is happening here, or people in general really are just fucking brainless about what it takes to make good satire…

I don’t hate the show. I just hate that they miss the problem with so many things when they’re not as blatantly obvious as fucking fascists taking over the whitehouse.

South Park isn’t a direct satire, never/rarely was, it takes small bits & pieces from reality and make another reality/universe. The allegories don’t stack up, never really have (iirc, I might have forgotten stuff over the years). They only have short satiric comments, the satire ends basically before that is woven into a story along with other made-up bits. So rectoplasm on the nose is satire, but everything beyond that is just random story.
They make short jokes on reality as a way to get ideas flowing for the story.

          Why should they change now?

The main difference is that (very) lately the arches again centre around random bits from USA politics. It’s what dominates the news/society. And to that they say in the show how everything changed & now they (the kids) now have to pay attention or whatever - something I hear from the few (up to recently apolitical) people I know living over there.

I just hate that they miss the problem with so many things

Do you have any example them telling a good moral on current events? They prob did it at least a few times, but usually not - they just make stuff up for the lolz, not to serve reshape and educate society. A society/individuals expecting that from South Park would be a silly one.

          Not straight up juvenile parody.

Trey Parker is too immature himself to make poignant satire

I think we basically agree, I just don’t member when things were that much different & I’m not sure why would I expect more from South Park.

Perhaps you’ve just outgrown SP & it doesn’t suit you anymore, it is a long running show after all.

They’ve apologized for haven’t dogshit political takes. I don’t excuse them but if you’re looking at SP for ANY insight you need to look at yourself.

Why do they keep trying to make real satire when they’re shit at it? An apology only means something if behavior changes.
