The game is just about shooting, driving and stealing shit. It is not this out this world experience haha. The amount of “GTA coming out some day” content that I get is way too much.

I don’t think it’s gatekeeping; I think they’re just trying to understand the appeal.
I think it’s more about overhyping and I can kind of get behind it. Marketing machinery makes people feel some sort of FOMO, in order to be a member of (western) society it seems you are somewhat expected to consume certain media titles.
I’ve seen this happen also on MS Flight Simulator, where folks who have never built their own pc or don’t really care about flying planes suddenly feel they need to invest thousands just to play a fight sim three times before deciding to sell the rig. I think something similar happened with Baldur’s Gate 3.
It’s just that if enough weight is put on any game, non-gamers and gamers alike suddenly feel the need to be in the know, they need to see what the fuss is about, try it on for size.
GTA has been one of these ‘must own’ games since 3 (even though the top-down games were already ace), but I think the number of players that actually finished the full storyline will be very small. This I think also shows the appeal of games like Just Cause (I’ve never played it but my nephew age 11 loved to just cause mayhem), it’s easier to get into and the mayhem is not a possibility, it’s guaranteed.
Bottom line: I think GTA is just one of those titles that people already know is good, because reviews and other gamers will say it’s good, and they’ll keep saying that until GTA 17 is released in 1000 years. The baseline of course is true, Rockstar puts in a great deal of effort to make a very good crime RPG which is a limited genre as it is.
