Dunno about the rest of you, but i’ve been enjoying Marathon since the server slam, despite being one of Bungie’s biggest haters (blame Destiny 2 entirely for that)
If you’re on the fence, I suggest giving it a try, get over the gear fear, and try out the free play week at the start of the season.
- Uses BattleEye and refuses to run on Linux.
- Controller players have built-in aimbot.
- Gunplay revolving around getting the drop on other players with minimal counterplay and fast TTK.
- Gameplay design steered by Reddit or whoever complains the loudest.
- Basic changes and QoL celebrated with purple prose blog posts.
- In-game currency purchases misaligned with what you can buy with that currency.
Yep, it’s Bungie time.
True haters of Bungie understand.

god you’re so right, but it’s also the sauce that made halos 1-3 so much fun
Fuck yeah. I’ve been hoping for this. Wanted to see if it actually tuns on my PC first.
it’s not that big and it’s stylized art should make it more flexible to run on anything
Steam Deck
What’s it like compared to others in the genre? What’s it most like?
I can’t really compare it to other extraction shooters cos I only really played Hunt: Showdown, but basically it’s Halo/Destiny gunplay (just a lot less jump floaty-ness) with Apex character abilities combined with the extraction shooter loop of gambling your stuff and getting the shit kicked out of you repeatedly in the faint hope of somehow limping along the finish line with some good loot. Also, for some reason it’s got a bonkers crazy involved story drawing from stuff like Stalker, Annihilation and Ghost in the Shell, the only catch being you’ve got to piece it together like in Dark Souls. (Also to be fair when I tried out Destiny I did really like all the really high concept sci-fi stuff, I just took issue with all the FOMO in that game.)
It’s crazy hard and unforgiving, but once it clicks and you understand the systems (and basically understand how to hedge your bets) and understand how the maps work… I dunno, I’ve been playing it everyday for a couple rounds after work since launch. Something about it just really scratches some itches for me.
That being said- this is a sweaty af game, and I think that most people are going to bounce off it because there’s no chill version of it atm (maybe they’ll add some new modes in future). But it’ll have it’s own small and dedicated following because of that lack of chill, I think.
I dont really play that many extraction shooters. It’s very streamlined, and it’s very streamlined compared to Arc Raiders
