Hello it’s me the 23-year-old jaded formerly famous detective

Then again, in this world you have 12-year-olds serving in the military so I guess it makes sense

For all the amusement you can get from the setting, at its core it’s very “generic late 2000s/2010s anime.” Every game has a literal beach episode as an excuse to put the (often underage) female characters in swimsuits and to animate them jiggling

Which is a big shame because the setting is a great opportunity to explore and criticize some great issues like independence, racism, historical materialism, class, penal labor, and whether or not the concept of Europe should have ever been allowed to exist.

      You know, deep philosophy.

It tries to do some of those things sometimes. How the series handles racism feels weird. Most people are horrifically racist against the Darcsen (the broad analogue for the Jews/Roma), even on the Gallian side, but the protagonists seem weirdly passive about the issue even when its their friends or adopted family members being racially abused by randos in front of them.

I blame, in this exact order, the Portuguese, the Catholic Church, Commodore Perry, the Daimyōs of Chōshū, Satsuma, and Tosa, Emperors Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa, The Japanese Communist Party, General McArthur, Syngman Rhee, Harry Truman, and Hayato Ikeda for setting the groundwork for Japan’s pedophilia problems.
