One of the (now)classics is The 5Th Element, it was marketed as a star wars type movie.
I HATED The 5th Element when I first saw it, because I was expecting something far more serious than it was. Once I figure out what it was really supposed to be I enjoy it every time I watch it
Recently Digger and The Sheep Detectives come to mind. I’d also add Paddington 2 and Wonka to that list
I was so shocked by how much I enjoyed Sheep Detectives. The trailers made it out to be just another obnoxious kids movie with talking animals, but I loved it
Since the trailer I saw about Digger was mostly about Tom Cruise and not the movie, I can’t disagree.
I know no more about Digger after watching the trailer than I did before.
I have a theory that started with the movie Toys. When it came out they talked about Robon Williams, about how great he was, and how he was in Toys. It was shit. Gigli came about, they talked about how Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were in it, and how great they were. I wondered if it was going to be shit, and it was. I saw the trailer for Digger, reminded her of my theory, and here we are. The critics who are saying it isn’t as bad as the critics who are panning it say it 8s, and gave it 3.5/5 instead of 2.5/5.
Elemental (2023) was so poorly marketed that it bombed. Nevermind that viral clip about the kid character trying to flirt. The problem was they marketed it as a love story when it was actually about the struggles of moving into a new culture/environment and parallels to immigration.
The love story is why I wasn’t interested. Might check it out now.
The Warrior with Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton. I remember the trailers making it seem like some generic boxing/sports movie, and I was not interested in seeing it. I went to the movies with a couple friends once and after seeing the movie we originally planned to see, walked into The Warrior for a “second feature.”
I was honestly blown away by the performances and story. It’s such a good movie.
The Pixar movie Hoppers comes to mind. Trailer made it look like the crap “bean mouth slop” that Pixar had been churning out in recent years. Actual movie is WAY more weird and unhinged than the trailers indicate. I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would.
(I randomly watched the Honest Trailer and it totally sold me on the movie, even if it spoiled stuff.)
Hmm, maybe I should check it out then. I had the same apprehension.
Mostly because I thought the trailer made it look like total crap, but Civil War turned out better than expected, though it’s far from what I’d call amazing or anything
I try to avoid trailers for things I already want to see as best I can these days tbh, had too many things spoiled in various ways over the years
We taking Captain America, or something else?
Could be that 2024 film about a hypothetical Second American Civil War.
I love how the Civil War discourse about it being about nothing while it clearly is about a lot of things. Anyone that says is about nothing is gaslighting the conversation because they clearly agree with the antagonist’s politics.
Frozen.
The trailer implied it was a movie about a snowman and a reindeer.
John Carter.
Not saying it was great, just that it might not have flopped so hard if they had it least included “of Mars” and given us a clue about the theme.
Star Trek Beyond, but that was a blatant fumble on theh marketing side.
Inception was just undersold as an action thriller
Kudos to OP for this thread, I’m reevaluating a lot of movies’ placement on my to-see list.
Transformers One most definitely.
That was by far the best Transformers movie.
