Every time I hear anything about Costco it always seems to be the only US company that’s run by someone within an actual brain and who is capable of thinking more than 1 quarter into the future.
Apparently they do exist in Europe but I’ve never seen them
I shill for Costco whenever I can because this has been my experience too. Their employee badges have “member since” on them and there’s a LOT of people who have been there for 15+ years. Also 2 dollars gets you a slice of pizza that takes up a whole paper plate.
It’s true, and I think a big factor is they have a genuinely brilliant business model.
Basically they sell everything in bulk and roughly at cost, and make their whole profit from membership fees. This is brilliant because it creates upsides for all 3 parties involved:
the consumer gets cheap items
the brands selling things get large bulk sales negotiated in advance
Costco Canada employee here. Yeah there is a lot of corporate bullshit, but also a lot of good. I help send out pallets of stuff to local food banks and animal shelters every day. I have the mid level benefits that give me 80 percent of all my healthcare expenditures. All of them.
In two weeks I will top out on the pay scale at $34.40/hr. I started with Costco in 2022, and I’m just a returns clerk in the back, not a manager or supervisor.
In Canada it feels like a, “the enemy of my enemy” situation. Yes they’re a massive US company, but our own grocery oligopoly doesn’t feel great to support either. Shopping local is the best option, but cost can often be a problem.
They also ate the cost of the tariffs instead of raising prices

I think there are two Costco stores in Paris. Not sure about anywhere else.
