There’s also another trend I see yanks do where they go so all-in on “teehee white people no seasoning” they run away from anything they deem to be “white” - hence the dunking on salt that was a trend a year or so ago. Some sort of weird reverse white saviour I see people do, like they try to say “i’m one of the good ones or something”. I think it’s a mix of all three: Racism, colonialism and I don’t know what to call the last thing… Neoliberalism? Tokenism?
I think it’s lazy. It’s a way to signal anti-whiteness without actually doing anything. Being in community is hard, organizing is hard, reading books is hard, working through theory is hard, but making fun of white culture is really easy.
brits used to deride oats as horse feed because they hated the scottish or something, maybe we inherited that
I thought it was a classism thing because oats and/or whatever grains available were used to make prole-slop gruel to feed to the child labour slaves in the poorhouses during the industrial revolution. Maybe they got knackered together because of Charles Dickens making gruel synonymous with worker exploitation.
There’s probably a racism element too, because we’re talking about the British.

You know what’s easy AND helps build community? Making big bowl of porridge for all to enjoy
