And it’s people that make it all terrible. It doesn’t matter what system you come up with, cluster B personality disorders will pervert the system for their own personal gain.
Humans, as a whole, are violent, scared, selfish, tribal animals. It really doesn’t take much for the masses to follow an individual they see as powerful who promises them answers for all of their problems. And it doesn’t take much for us to blame the other tribe for our problems.
Communism in particular is vulnerable to this because all of the economic power is centralized by default. You might be able to get away with this at a tribal level, but every time it’s been tried at a national level it’s ended up with a monster murdering a large chunk of the population.
This isn’t at all a defense of capitalism, though. Capitalism is reaching the same end result, although because power was initially distributed it took a long time to centralize.
Basically, humanity is fucked unless we can drastically and rapidly change our underlying psychology.
Socialism is a mode of production where public ownership is the principle aspect of the economy and the working classes in control of the state, and communism is a post-socialist, fully collectivized mode of production and distribution. Socialism has existed in the USSR, PRC, Cuba, etc. while communism has not yet been reached.
Why is communism terrible, and why would a “middle ground” be better? What would that look like?
Socialism is the middle ground.
