For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is The Wedding (2004), a Polish black comedy about a man in small-town Poland who marries off his daughter after bribing the groom with a new car, only to discover the car is provided by gangsters who demand he pay up at once. The dad is habitual cheapskate, refusing not only the mob’s demands (which include the deed to his land), but even to pay the workers at the eponymous wedding, instead haggling his way through life in a sleazy and undignified manner. Hilarity ensues. Director Wojtek Smarzowski is otherwise best-known for the thriller Home Sweet Home (2025), which we have not yet watched. Great reviews for this; it is apparently considered a classic in Poland, so we’ll give it a shot.
Between the features is The Man Who Planted Trees (1987) a 31-minute Canadian short animation. An old man in the French Alps in the early 20th century tries to repopulate the region’s forests with trees. Yes, that’s the whole premise, and it is one of the most acclaimed animated shorts ever, so let’s check it out. This is by far the best-known and best-regarded work of animator Frederic Back.
After that is Practical Magic (1998), a witchy thriller about a pair of sisters (Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman) from a magical family decide to stay out of their family’s occult affairs. Unfortunately, one of the ladies’ boyfriends dies in circumstances that casts suspicion upon them, so they learn a resurrection spell that brings the BF back to life by injecting his body with an evil spirit. Turns out all women in the family are cursed to cause their lovers’ premature deaths. Events escalate from there. This looks pretty silly, but it’s really popular on Letterboxd for some reason, so let’s check it out. Director Griffin Dunne is better-known as an actor, particularly as the star of Martin Scorsese’s After Hours (1985); this is his only notable directorial credit.
