Lazily written, usually 3-chord, radio-friendly-bullshit music, though the sound usually evolves with the current trends to some degree. Some examples:
1970s: About 85% of Kiss’s back catalogue, a fair amount of Ted Nugent, you could make an argument for Foghat… The term isn’t usually applied to pre-glam/hair stuff, though. But it absolutely applies to Kiss.
1980s: Most of the glam/hair metal scene (Motley Crue, Poison, notably a single track by Warrant that the label forced them to put out as a single and ended up being the one song everyone thinks of if you mention vapid 80’s party rock)
1990s: Staind, fair amount of Godsmack, Papa Roach, Crazy Town, POD
2000s and up: Five Finger Death Punch, Breaking Benjamin, Creed, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, Shinedown, and more recently Imagine Dragons
…It’s a nebulous label at best, but if you hear a song playing and you immediately think, “ugh, not this shit again,” there’s a good chance it’s butt rock.
When it comes to early-to-mid 2000s rock, there’s actually a difference between nu-metal and buttrock. Crazy Town and P.O.D. are nu-metal, Papa Roach was nu-metal at first and then became buttrock.
2000s buttrock aka ”post-grunge” is anything that sounds like Nickelback, such as 3 Doors Down, Theory of a Deadman, Hinder etc. Also, it sucks and is possibly the worst music subgenre in history, plus it’s full of chud bands.
I think it’s the sort of overproduced, moderately distorted wall of noise style with a male vocalist kind of sleepily whine-singing in between bouts of still-legible fake screaming that was mainstream rock in the '00s? I’m not sure what the actual “genre” definitions are, but that’s how I’d describe the examples I know of.
