For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is A Patch of Blue (1965), a romantic drama about a blind woman (Shelley Winters) who meets a black man (Sidney Poitier), and the two hit it off. Unfortunately, the woman’s social circle is filled with chuds who already didn’t like her, and doubly don’t like the new guy. Nevertheless, the man shows her a life beyond her sheltered and miserable existence; maybe she can escape and they will get their happy ending? I dunno, but I want to find out. This is the best-known and best-regarded work of director Guy Green, whose career was middling otherwise.

After that is An Average Little Man (1977), an Italian class-warfare-themed satire about an accountant ready to retire, but not before he finds a similar paper-pushing white-collar job for his son. He finds obstacles at every turn, most of them resulting from his class position, and decides soon enough to take drastic action to ensure his son’s position. Reviews often compare this to the Fantozzi movies, the first two of which we previously watched, since they both center on a frazzled small-time bureaucrat gradually Jokerfied by the absurdities of class relations. Director is Italian comedy maestro Mariom Monicelli, whose work has appeared numerous times on the ‘tube, namely Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958), My Friends (1975), The Organizer (1963), and The Great War (1959). This is considered one of the best Italian comedies ever, so let’s give it a shot.
