My weekly preamble is in spoiler tags below.
preamble
The so-called “Economic D-Day” is set to start this week, which is the term trotted out by the US to describe what it regards as the most crushing sanctions ever unveiled in all of human history against a foreign state. Up to me writing this, nobody appears to have many guesses as to what precisely this would entail, but a confirmed aspect is secondary sanctions - i.e. the sanctioning of any country that does business with Iran. China is Iran’s largest trading partner, and has previously explicitly ordered their oil/refining companies to keep receiving and processing Iranian oil regardless of US sanctions. Assuming China maintains this relationship, and the ever-sanctioned Russia does likewise, it’s difficult to see how these sanctions could not only 1) be significantly more effective than the current sanctions on Iran, which are very substantial and yet are being successfully sidestepped and mitigated, albeit at a meaningful cost to Iran’s citizens, and 2) outright bring Iran to a position of surrender when it is in the midst of an existential war. The only conceivable way would be if the US did genuinely sanction China in response, which even the US, in this phase of baffling idiocy, is not yet so stupid as to attempt. Other suggestions I’ve seen is that the sanctions aren’t so much about trying to keep China away as much as stopping the Gulf states from ever economically, politically, and indeed militarily reconciling with Iran; essentially saying “At the end of this war, you may not be on our side, but you certainly won’t be on Iran’s either.”
Nonetheless, ever since Iran militarily proved themselves back in March and April, and, in particular, their missile cities proved effectively indestructible, I and many others came to the conclusion that the only way to destroy Iran would be some kind of internal political or economic crisis - likely both, going hand-in-hand - and it appears that US war planners now agree. A resumption of missile fire is still plenty possible, mind, but if I was the US, it would be in support of that hypothetical internal crisis, were it ever to start, rather than putting the cart before the horse. Therefore, one does have to take the threat of some kind of overwhelming economic offensive at least a little seriously, simply because it’s the only non-nuclear vector left that has even the vaguest possibility of success. From all the analysts I take seriously, I’m getting signals that trend towards optimism that Iran will survive whatever the Bessents of the world can cook up; however, mere survival should not be Iran’s medium/long term goal. Imaginary tankers transiting Hormuz notwithstanding, and with global diesel prices now skyrocketing notwithstanding, it’s still unclear to me what the end result would be if Iran and the US simply decided to stop fighting from now on and apply maximum sanctions/energy disruption for weeks, months, or even years on end. Would China eventually pressure Iran to make concessions, for example? Could a critical portion of Iran’s population, or a segment of the Iranian bourgeoisie, be tempted to try and overthrow the government to end the pain, long before the economy truly internally collapsed?
That’s likely why, in response to the proposed sanctions on Iran, there have been signals coming out of the country (as always, hard to verify in the fog of invented/misattributed statements and exaggerations) that Iran could counterstrike by attacking US economic interests in the region - which, if correctly done, sounds much better to me than simply sitting there with thousands of missiles not being fired while you gradually bleed out over the medium term, hoping that the other guy will bleed out first. This would be a pretty profound step for Iran, though. Aside from maintaining the Hormuz blockade, they have always held the (somewhat strategically dubious) “moral high ground” of being the guy to respond to military attacks, perhaps due to an anxiety of being seen as a warmonger either internally or in countries throughout the world, not least their major allies.
So after all that bloviating, I have little more to offer than a shrug in terms of my predictions about what comes next.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict
Sources:
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don’t want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it’s just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists’ side.
Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.
Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:
Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.
https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR’s former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR’s forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster’s telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a ‘propaganda tax’, if you don’t believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.
Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:
Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Compatible leftists. What annoys me, is that they are so cheap to bribe. The CIA only ever needs little pushes to direct them, not a huge budget. Just to stay relevant a little longer, read your name in a newspaper again, stay a little more palatable in the liberal eye for publishers, public events, teaching positions, etc. I guess the big one is “don’t get targeted as terrorist sympathizers”, to keep that privilege. But they could just shut up to get that. But they can’t shut up, or they would have to change careers and they are too old for that or think they are.
The US may be a crumbling empire but you dont get that far without some reproduction of your national conscious
I wonder why there have to be these periodic signed letters of leftists denouncing some official enemy state? I remember the syrian war a while back and I assume there was one for ukraine. All the while there really isn’t any doubt that people who sign these letters hold these positions so I assume the real reason is that since there is a long held tradition of anti-imperialism on the left (that they don’t share) since they present themselves as leftists they’re afraid of losing oportunities so they have to do these “WE’RE NOT LIKE THEM” stunts

there are westerners that spread anti western rhetoric, why is so hard for them?
Class solidarity where they identify more with “dissident intellectuals” than with the proletariat, and thus forget that they could be dissidents at home in a way where it would do some good?
they always have to position themselves as above the leftist rabble. If the widespread left unanimously believes in a principled cause, they will find a way to be contrarian or hedge to give themselves a ‘step up’ in the discourse and pretend like they know better in a very condescending and paternalistic manner. It’s an essential part of them being a “leftist whisperer” to the media, they have to translate actual principled street level positions into media-friendly corporate babble, what the protesters really want (it’s not what they say it is, it’s what I say it is)
I’ve encountered a lot of
“Actually, your slogan lacks nuance” from my academic acquaintances.
Umm akshually you didn’t write a 15-page thesis with explicitly defined terms so your argument is fallacious
They are just reddit nerds at this point. Contrarians, reactionaries, debatelords, chasing after “karma” fake points (academic “clout” and “citations” and other bullshit that makes them feel important and strokes their egos)
I told one guy he was reinventing “All Lives Matter” and he called me a reductionist
since lawyers exist i think it actually is important to rigorously define terms like that. several current social problems could have been headed off if people had used more explicit and precise language.
In regards to political platforms and street slogans, no this level of wankery is not needed at all and is complete concern trolling by people who are not part of the movement. Definitions explicitly defined only matter once we’re writing legislature and forming our constitution and internal party platform once in power, which is years off. Every single lib and ultra going “uhhh we shouldn’t say Abolish Police” and “uhhh Black Lives Matter is not great optics” was not on our side and their “contributions” are wholly negative and parasitic.
me writing a 200+ page scree about how “Peace, Land, and Bread” does not account for Homo sapien sapien’s biological need for drinkable water
N-n-n-n-no, your slogan lacks nuance!
And I won’t have it any other way.
They gotta pay the daddy tax
they want to continue getting speaking and writing gigs, getting invited to fancy parties and working at big charities and NGOs. They want their “legacy” and family trusts to be secure. They are sell outs, it’s that simple. Pathetic scum because they know better.
These “academics” or leftist figures are so fucking pathetic. Honestly, I’m starting to reactionarily hate academia as an institution because it’s populated by such pathetic striver sellouts, or at least these are the types that get boosted.
But regarding the letter, someone should point out to these fucking losers the propaganda isn’t going to change the situation on the ground and neither will public support generated by such propaganda (like would a ground invasion help). Like you can’t pr your way into winning a war. I mean at this point even the Zionazi or US nukes will result in response that has a great chance of wrecking the global economy permanently, along with the Zionazi entity and pathetic sellout gulf states
Edit:
“To Iran’s political prisoners, trapped ‘between two blades of a scissors”
This is so fucking cringe. Is this the best these big brain academics can come up with lol. This reads like something Mossad came up with
Let’s be real, this propaganda isn’t to get libs to support the war now
this is just priming the pump so libs will support the war under their guy in 2028
I agree. But I’m also annoyed by how absolutely trash tier the propaganda is but still gets the bloodthirsty libs (in this case) on board with the next genocide. Like “trapped between two blades of a scissors”??? Give me a fucking break. Although it fits the caliber of these academics

Unfortunately while I’ve seen good pushback against this letter, my xitter TL has been flooded with all those ultra-leftists that defend it.
i looked at one of those accounts, an iranian emigrant to the us who’s history is cute photos of herself in nyc at sunset boasting about the possibilities and awesome progress of western cancer meds, before she decides to be a “real anti imperialist” and blanket any indictment of the western crimes that fueled her “success” with essentially whataboutism.
NATO leftist found in a NATO country. It’s more common than you think.
Sorry, we can’t teach the Iranian diaspora in the US their own history. You’re patrionizing the Global South! /s
that was quick
I’m willing to believe Mumia that someone signed for him and he’s not involved since he is in a fucking US prison and smuggled out an unabashedly pro-resistance message. The rest of the “academic left” is obviously covering their asses due to the backlash and frankly, no one should’ve trusted them before anyway.

Angela Davis was a protege of Herbert Marcuse and the influence clearly shows the older she gets
Gabriel Rockhill was one of the last two students of Derrida and he turned around and absolutely destroyed French theory by calling them out as CIA supported compatible leftists and building a dialectic materialist theory of theory production.
We love him and his theory and his earring and his hat
She endorsed Hillary Clinton for president this is hardly the most lib brained thing she has ever done
Simple. Because they know who pays them.
I can maybe understand the tudeh guy but the others are wack
Im not caught up on this. What exactly about her work is zionist?
after a bit of digging I found this long winded yes i condemn Hamas piece they wrote in oct 2023
