Genuinely get more life experiences you fucking dorks.
This is a common problem with whatever medium you’re consuming. Game makers love to make games on making games, writers fucking love to jerk their massive type writters on writing metaphors, etc ec.
“I am watched as I am watching, I am audience and creation; the Earth shall know my power!”

subtext is for cowards, every movie should be literally about making movies
Turn the camera around and film the cameraman.
Suspension of disbelief is for the willingly propagandized; all movies are literally about making movies
They say write what you know but it turns out that writers should just not
There are people who have tons of interesting life experiences who don’t realize it and never tell anyone and then there are people who have lived boring lives and spend their lives inventing increasingly intricate ways to fill out How To Write A Screenplay like a madlib
Especially movie musicals. I loathe La La Land.
inside me are two wolves. one hates la la land and the other loves the producers
The Producers gets a pass because at its core it’s about roasting fascists, that’s a noble purpose.
Also Rocky Horror gets a pass because it’s one of a kind.
Maybe I should amend my original loathing to loathing musicals about the glamour of Hollywood.
is rocky horror about film making? I guess I missed that never been a huge rocky stan but I went to my first live showing this year and have had the songs stuck in my head since.
Rocky Horror is a collection of movie references wrapped in a rainbow flag, and the climax - so to speak - of the story is about putting on a show. Even if it’s not directly about filmmaking I think theatre is adjacent enough for it to count in spirit.
Well the producers is fantastic.
the continuing consequences of “write what you know”
Way too many of Stephen King’s protagonists are famous alcoholic authors
It’s like when bands tour for so long that they forget what other parts of life are like, so they start to sing about touring
Actually the worrying thing there is how much of his work is about abusive husbands/fathers
At some point I feel like he was just trying to see what he could get away with with his editor.
He was on so much coke he doesn’t really remember himself if that helps.
Examples of some?
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma
Seven Psychopaths
Trumbo
Mank!
Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One
Probably some others
Audition (1999)
State and Main (2000)
Tropic Thunder (2008)
Hail, Caesar! (2016)There are many literal examples, many of them already named, and there are metaphorical examples, such as The Cabin In The Woods, Megalopolis, Nope (Which is still about people in the film industry), etc.
8 1/2, Adaptation., The Producers
Truly some of the worst movies are about making movies
Adaptation was brilliant, right @Grebgreb@hexbear.net ?
(I was joking, these are some of my favorite movies)
Actually I should have added Synecdoche, New York in there to for another Kauffman banger about making a movie
IMO, the filmmaking aspect is less “what it’s about” and more a byproduct of the theme of forming a narrative of your own life in your head, and how this narrative transforms as time goes on.
I think it gets to be much richer seen this way. For example, you can notice the exact moment it becomes clear that Caden fucked up and is destined to become a bitter old person (the priest’s sermon) (going from memory here, it’s been a while)
That movie really hit me hard, emotionally
I cried so goddamn much at the final song, about 10 years ago.
I rewatched it recently and was startled by how much of my own disfunctional thoughts were exposed but I didn’t notice then. At the time it was a formless resonance and that certain mystery it creates, but now the connections became clear. It’s a different experience, like watching your former self repeat mistakes you already lived through and learned from. The painful thoughts you have when trying to sleep.
I wonder what I didn’t notice this time that will stick out years from now. Makes me anxious 😬
I bawled through half the movie, and then left and went for a walk right after. It was a lot. I don’t know if I would watch it again, yeah, like you said, it makes me anxious to see what I’ll discover.
My favourite movie is Cabin in the Woods because it’s about how the mods refuse to heed the will of the people and make a :beanis-salute: emoji
I used to think I hated movies about movies, but it turns out I just hate auteurism.
Shout out to Pedro Almodovar who has used the movie in a movie as a way to do a detective without cops (La Mala Educacion). One cut of the dead is a movie about how awesome is it to pull of a movie even if the bosses and the circumstances try to sabotage you at every corner.
Movies about movies /plays/books/etc are a great vehicle for passing off propaganda. It adds another layer of disbelief suspension and gives the maker an opportunity to feign ignorance, “Look, I’m just making a movie about a movie director who thinks all billionaires need to decapitated. That’s not my actual belief. It’s a total coincidence he stares into the camera and says, ‘I am the director of this movie and I think we should kill every last billionaire!’”
Professionalization of art and its consequences and so on.
Yeah, well maybe all you life experience havers should have spent more time networking instead
