China is preparing to initiate large-scale production of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), narrowing a technology gap with South Korea in a critical component for AI semiconductors. As Chinese manufacturers ramp up current-generation output, South Korean memory makers are moving to extend their market lead with next-generation products.
No, but the manufacturer in question was rumoured to be “saving” the consumer DRAM market because they happened to be making some that wasn’t as hugely marked up over Micron.
Instead, that manufacturing capacity is (understandably) being directed into HBM for Chinese datacenters, some of which are still relying on stockpiles of Samsung memory.
